The Enzo Ferrari is a 12
cylinder mid-engine berlinetta
named after the company's founder, Enzo
Ferrari. It is currently one of the most powerful naturally aspirated production
cars.[citation needed] It was
built in 2002 using Formula One technology, such as a carbon-fibre
body, F1-style electrohydraulic shift
transmission, and Carbon fibre-reinforced Silicon
Carbide (C/SiC) ceramic composite disc
brakes. Also used are technologies not allowed in F1 such as active
aerodynamics and traction control. After a downforce
of 775 kg (1,709 lb) is reached at 355.6 km/h (221 mph) the rear wing
is actuated by computer to maintain that downforce.

The Enzo's V12 engine is the first of a new generation for
Ferrari. It is based on the architecture of the V8
found in sister-company Maserati's Quattroporte, using the same basic
architecture and 104 mm (4.1 in) bore spacing. This design will replace
the former architectures seen in V12 and V8 engines used in most other
contemporary Ferraris. The 2005 F430
is the second Ferrari to get a version of this new powerplant.

In 2004, Sports Car International named
the Enzo Ferrari number three on their list of Top
Sports Cars of the 2000s.

Motor Trend Classic named the Enzo as number four in
their list of the ten "Greatest Ferraris of all time".

Though officially known as the Enzo Ferrari,[1]
the car is sometimes referred to colloquially as the "Ferrari Enzo",
or simply as "Enzo" with no marque or other words attached.

Celebrating its first World Championship of the new Millennium, in
Formula One, Ferrari built the Enzo to celebrate this achievement and
the company named the car after its founder, Enzo Ferrari, who died in
1988.[2][3]

The Enzo was initially announced at the 2002 Paris Motor Show with a limited production run of 349 units
and priced at US $643,330. The company sent invitations to existing
customers, specifically, those who had previously bought the Ferrari
F40 and Ferrari F50. All 349 cars were sold in this way
before production began. Later, after numerous requests, Ferrari decided
to build 50 more Enzos, bringing the total to 399. Before being
unveiled at the Paris Motor show, the Enzo (that was used in the show)
was flown from Italy to California to be filmed in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle.
It was driven on a beach by actress Demi
Moore. After filming was complete, the Enzo was flown to France to
be in the Motor Show.[4]
Enzos are listed as being built in 2003.

Ferrari built one more Enzo — the 400th car — and it was auctioned by
Sotheby's
Maranello Auction on June 28, 2005, to benefit survivors of the 2004 Tsunami for €950,000 (US$1,274,229), almost twice its list price. This sum
was presented to Pope Benedict XVI, while former Ferrari Formula
One driver Michael Schumacher gave the pope a steering wheel to
commemorate the donation. This wheel included a plaque which read, "The
Formula 1 World Champion's steering wheel to His Holiness Benedict XVI,
Catholicism's driver."

The Enzo Ferrari typically trades above $1,000,000 (£500,000) at
auction.[5]

Three prototype "mules" were built, M1, M2, and M3. Each was bodied
to look like a 348, even though the mules were built in 2000.
The third mule was offered for auction alongside the 400th Enzo in June,
2005, bringing €195,500 (US$236,300).[6]

The Enzo is a mid-engined car with a
43.9/56.1 front/rear weight distribution. The engine is Ferrari's F140 65° V12
with 4 valves per cylinder, dual overhead cams and variable valve timing. Bosch Motronic ME7 fuel injection is used and the engine is naturally aspirated. It displaces
5998 cc (366 in³) and produces 660 PS (651 hp/485 kW)
at 7800 rpm and 657 N·m (485 [ft·lbf of
torque]) at 5500 rpm.[7]
The redline
is 8000 rpm.[8]

[edit] Chassis

The Enzo has a semi-automatic transmission
(also known as the F1 gearbox) using paddles to control an automated
shifting and clutch mechanism, with LED lights on the steering wheel
telling the driver when to change gears. The gearbox has a shift
time of just 150 milliseconds. The transmission was a first
generation "clutchless" design from the late 1990s, and there have been
complaints about its abrupt shifting.[7][9]

The Enzo Ferrari has 4 wheel independent suspension with push-rod
actuated shock absorbers which can be adjusted from
the cabin, complemented with anti-roll bars at the front and rear.[10]

The Enzo uses 483-millimetre (19 in) wheels and has 381-millimetre
(15 in) Brembo
disc
brakes. The Enzo uses 19" wheels held by a single lug nut and Bridgestone
Potenza Scuderia RE050A tires.[11]

The Enzo can accelerate to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 3.14 seconds[12]
and can reach 100 mph (160 km/h) in 6.6 seconds.[7]
The ¼ mile (~400 m) time is 11.0 at 136 mph (219 km/h) and the top
speed has been recorded to be as high as 360 kilometres per hour
(220 mph).[13]
It is rated at 12 miles per US gallon (20 L/100 km; 14 mpg-imp)
in the city and 18 miles per US gallon (13 L/100 km; 22 mpg-imp)
on the highway.

Despite the Enzo's extraordinary performance and price, the Ferrari 430 Scuderia (an improved version of
Ferrari's current mid-range production car) is capable of lapping the
Ferrari test track just as quickly as the Enzo.[14]

Evo magazine tested the Enzo on the famed Nordschleife
Circuit and ran a 7:25.21 lap time. The Enzo in the test had a
broken electronic damper.

Ferrari FXX

As the result of the Enzo, Ferrari has decided to use some of the
technology developed for it in a small-scale program to get more
feedback from certain customers for use in future car design as well as
their racing program. The core of this program is a car called the
Ferrari FXX. It is loosely based on the Enzo's design with a
highly-tuned 6.3 litre version of the Enzo's engine putting out roughly
800 PS (590 kW; 790 hp). The gearbox is new as well as the tires
(custom-designed for this car by Bridgestone)
and the brakes (developed by Brembo).
In addition, the car is fitted with extensive data-recording and
telemetry systems to allow Ferrari to record the car's behavior. This
information will be used by Ferrari to develop their next sports car.

Like the Enzo, the car was sold to specially selected existing
clients of Ferrari only; the initial price was €1.3 million. Unlike the
Enzo, the clients did not take delivery of the car themselves. Rather,
it is maintained by Ferrari and available for the client's use on
various circuits as arranged by Ferrari and also during private track
sessions. The car is not expected to be street-legal or suitable for
road use.

The Ferrari FXX program will continue until 2008/2009 with the
Ferrari FXX Evoluźione. The car will continue to be improved under the
Evolution kit, which will continually adjust specifics to create more
power, change gearing, and remove drag. The 6262 cc V12 engine will be
pushing out 860 PS (630 kW; 850 hp) at 9500 rpm. There will be gearbox
changes so that shift time will be reduced to 60 milliseconds per shift,
a reduction of 20 milliseconds. The car will also undergo aerodynamic
changes and improvements to the traction control system. Its top speed
is 227 mph.[15]

Ferrari P4/5

Pininfarina be officially badged as a Ferrari
and along with Andrea Pininfarina and James Glickenhaus agreed that its
official name would be "had wanted to do a special one-off Enzo-based
supercar and was looking for a backer. After sending out feelers to its
clients, American Ferrari collector, James Glickenhaus eventually agreed to back the project
by commissioning the car as a modern homage to great Ferrari sports
racing cars such as the 330 P3/4, 512 S, 312 P, and 333 SP on the last
unregistered U.S.-spec Enzo chassis.[16]
The car was dubbed the Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina,[17]
and retains the Enzo's drivetrain and vehicle
identification number.[18]
The car was unveiled at the 2006 Pebble Beach Concours
d'Elegance and appeared in the September issue of Car and Driver. The "photos" previously shown in AutoWeek
and Octane were not close to what the car looks like. After its
unveiling at Pebble Beach, the P4/5 returned to Europe for high speed
testing, press days, and an appearance at the Paris Auto Show in September.

Upon seeing P 4/5, Luca di Montezemolo felt that the car deserved to
Ferrari P 4/5 by Pininfarina". Ted West wrote an article in Car and
Driver about how this came to be: "The Beast of Turin".[16]

The Maserati MC12 is a two-seat mid-engined sports car derivative of the Enzo
Ferrari developed by Maserati while under control of Ferrari. It was
developed specifically to be homologated
for racing in the FIA GT Championship, with a minimum requirement of 25
road versions to be produced before the car could be allowed to compete.
Maserati built 50 units, all of which were presold to selected
customers. A further variation, the MC12 Corsa is a track day car, similar to the Ferrari
FXX.

The Maserati MC12 has the same engine, chassis and gearbox as the
Enzo but the only externally visible component from the Enzo is the
windshield.[19][20]
The MC12 is slower accelerating (0–100 km/h in 3.8 s) and has a lower
top speed (330 km/h) or 208 mph and less drag coefficient (due to
sharper nose and smoother curves) than the Enzo due to engine tuning.[21]
However, the MC12 has lapped race tracks faster than the Enzo before,
specifically on the UK motoring show Top Gear, and
the Nurburgring Nordschleife (at colder outside temperature). However
this could be attributed to the MC12's Pirelli PZero Corsa tires which
have more grip than the Enzo's Bridgestone Scuderias[22]
and MC12 has sharper nose and smoother curves than Enzo.

The Maserati Birdcage 75th is a concept
car created by automobile manufacturer Maserati
and designed by Pininfarina. It was first introduced at the 2005
Geneva Auto Show. It draws
inspiration from the Maserati Tipo Birdcages of the 1960s and was made as a
celebration of Pininfarina's 75th anniversary.[23]
It is an evolution of the Enzo's MC12 cousin.

The Maserati MC12 Corsa is a variant of the MC12 intended for racetrack use. In contrast to the race version
of the MC12, of which street-legal versions were produced for
homologation purposes, the MC12 Corsa is intended for private use,
albeit restricted to the track, as the Corsa's modifications make it
illegal to drive on the road.

The Corsa was developed directly from the MC12 GT1, which won the
2005 FIA GT Manufacturers Cup.[24]
The car was released in mid-2006, "in response to the customer demand
to own the MC12 racing car and fueled by the growth in track days, where
owners can drive their cars at high speeds in the safety of a race
track", as stated by Edward Butler, General Manager for Maserati in Australia
and New Zealand.[8][24]
In similar fashion to the Ferrari
FXX, although the owners are private individuals, Maserati is
responsible for the storage, upkeep, and maintenance of the cars, and
they are only driven on specially organized track
days. Unlike the FXX, Corsas are not used for research and
development, and are used only for entertainment.[25]
A single MC12 Corsa has been modified by its owner to make it street-legal.[24]

Only twelve MC12 Corsas were sold to selected customers, each of whom
paid €1 million (US$1.47 million) for the privilege. Another three
vehicles were produced for testing and publicity purposes.[8][26]
The Corsa shares its engine with the MC12 GT1; the powerplant produces
755 PS (555 kW; 745 hp) at 8000 rpm, 122 PS (90 kW; 120 hp) more than
the original MC12.[27]
The MC12 Corsa shares the GT1's shortened nose, which was a requirement
for entry into the American Le Mans Series. The car was
available in a single standard color, named "Blue Victory", though the
car's paint could be customized upon request.[8]
The MC12 Corsa possesses steel/carbon racing brakes, but is not fitted
with an anti-lock braking system.[24]

Millechili (Italian for one thousand (mille) kilograms (chili)) is
the code name for a sports car, to be manufactured by Ferrari,
that will borrow features from Formula
One race cars. It will be a lightweight version of the Enzo
Ferrari, using the F430's aluminum space frame on a 104.3-inch
(2,650 mm) wheelbase. The V10 engine will exceed 600 hp (447 kW).
Production of around 300 cars is slated for 2010, with a base price of
around US$500,000.[28]

Millechili is developed in collaboration with University of Modena
and Reggio Emilia, faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Millechili Lab is a cross-project in which students are working
on light-weight car design.

Evoluzione

The Ferrari FXX program will continue until 2008/2009. The car will
continue to be improved under the Evolution kit, which will continually
adjust specifics to create more power, change gearing, and lower the
aerodynamic drag. The V12 engine will generate 860 PS (630 kW; 850 hp)
at 9500 rpm which boosts the top speed to 387 km/h (240 mph), and the
acceleration to 0–100 km/h in 2.5 seconds.[29]
There will be gearbox changes so that shift time will be reduced to 60
milliseconds per shift, a reduction of 40 milliseconds. The car will
also undergo aerodynamic changes and improvements to the traction
control system.[30]

The car uses some technology developed from the Enzo, and combines it with some
new developments from Ferrari and its suppliers. However, the car is
only a part of the overall program. Customers pay $2.5 million, but are
only allowed to drive the car on special track days which are approved
by Ferrari. After they drive the car, the owners are entitled to brief
Ferrari on the car's performance. Ferrari's sister company, Maserati,
has developed a similar car, the MC12 Corsa.

An evolution of the Enzo, in essence, the FXX shares some components
with the original car, but numerous, significant developments are unique
to the FXX.

The FXX's engine is based on the Enzo's, but displacement has been
increased to 6,262 cc (6.3 L; 382.1 cu in) from 5,988 cc (6.0 L;
365.4 cu in). Output has been boosted from the Enzo's 660 PS (485.4 kW;
651.0 hp), to 800 PS (588 kW; 789 hp) at 8,500 rpm.

The gearbox incorporates the latest developments from Ferrari's F1
program and has a shift time of under 100 ms.
The brake pads were also upgraded from the Enzo. It does, however,
retain the Carbon fibre-reinforced Silicon
Carbide (C/SiC) ceramic composite discs found on the Enzo.

The tyres on the FXX are 19 inch slicks custom-developed for the car by Pirelli.

As with the Enzo, the seat and pedal configuration are custom fitted
to the user's own measurements.

The FXX features comprehensive data-monitoring and telemetry that not
only allows the driver to improve performance, but also provides
Ferrari technicians with valuable data to improve the FXX and future
road-going Ferraris.

Ferrari has built 30, adding to the 29 that were originally planned.
These have all been sold to pre-selected past Ferrari customers, with
the exception of one which was retained by Ferrari S.p.A. Ferrari's F1
World Champion driver, Michael Schumacher, received the 30th when he retired
from Formula One racing at the end of 2006. Schumacher's FXX differs
from others in that it is the only black FXX without a stripe, it comes
with red trim on the wheels, it has matte exhaust tips (regular FXX's
have chrome tips), and his personal logo is stitched on the racing
seats.

FXX owners also participate in Ferrari's testing and brand
development programs. As part of the FXX program, the car is maintained
by the Ferrari factory. The purpose of this particular program is to
allow Ferrari's top customers exclusive access to its most up-to-date
technology and to utilize their input in the development of future
models. The models are only sold in Europe. Units can be imported, but
not owned, in any other continent. The FXX package was reported to cost
1.5 million euros (excluding taxes) (2.1mil USD),[1]
including the car and the services provided by Ferrari.

  wishbones with push-rod actuated coil-shock units, adaptive dampers,
  electronic shock absorbers, anti-roll bar
• Wheelbase: 2,650 mm (104 in)[3]
• Front track: 1,660 mm (65 in)
• Rear track: 1,650 mm (65 in)
• Rear view is provided by a roof mounted video camera displayed on a
  small inboard screen.[3]
• Top Speed: 345 km/h (214 mph)[2]

[edit] FXX Evoluzione

The Ferrari FXX program will continue until 2008/2009. The car will
continue to be improved under the Evolution kit, which will continually
adjust specifics to create more power, quicker gear changes, and to
lower the car's aerodynamic drag. The V12 engine will generate 860 PS
(630 kW; 850 hp) at 9500 rpm giving theoretical top speed of 400 km/h
(249 mph) but is limited to 340 km/h (211 mph) and 0-100 km/h in 2.5
seconds.[4]
There will be gearbox changes so that shift time will be reduced to 60
milliseconds per shift, a reduction of 40 milliseconds. The car will
also undergo aerodynamic changes and improvements to the traction
control system.[5]

[edit] Top Gear appearance

A black unstriped Ferrari FXX, owned by Michael Schumacher, was exhibited on the BBC's Top Gear show on 21 June 2009.
The car completed a lap of Top Gear's circuit in 1 minute and 10.7
seconds. The episode ended with the Ferrari FXX in first place on the board, thrashing the previous record of 1 minute
17.1 seconds previously held by a Gumpert Apollo S.[6]
However, the time was not kept due to the FXX's slick tyres, which are
not allowed under Top Gear rules.

With respect to this brand new exclusive model by Ferrari, in the MilleChili project we have to save 500Kg... what a challenge!   Still this car should not be too boring, if you have Eu 300K to invest to have one of the only 599 exemplaries...  Otherwise just save for the MilleChili Ferrari which will hopefully be just 1000Kg.  Rumours say however it will also cost more, at about 1 million Euros!   The fun is however that you can take part to the actual design process indirectly by contributing to our new journal

È la Ferrari da strada più veloce di
sempre. Si chiama 599 GTO e sarà prodotta in soli 599 esemplari
destinati ad altrettanti fortunati Paperoni in tutto il mondo. Per ora è
possibile ammirarla solo in fotografia. La presentazione ufficiale
avverrà a fine mese al salone dell’auto di Pechino. «Figlia» della
599XX, la GTO (acronimo di Gran Turismo Omologata) costerà oltre 300
mila euro. Chi potrà guidarla avrà da divertirsi.

I NUMERI - Ecco infatti i numeri che accompagnano l’ennesimo
capolavoro uscito da Maranello: motore 12 cilindri a V da 5.999 cc, 670
cavalli che spingono una vettura di 1495 kg, per un rapporto
peso/potenza di 2,23 Kg/cv. Accelerazione 0-100 km/h in 3,35''e velocità
massima superiore ai 335 km/h. La Ferrari 599 GTO ha già battuto il
record della pista di Fiorano: i collaudatori hanno percorso il circuito
in solo 1 minuto e 24 secondi. Questo bolide destinato ai ferraristi
duri e puri è composto da materiali leggerissimi che hanno permesso di
contenerne il peso.
