Cambridge University: Research Assistant/Associate in the mechanics of failure of adhesive joints

A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Research Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on the mechanics of failure of adhesive joints. The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

The key responsibilities and duties are to research fundamental mechanics of failure of adhesive joints in shipbuilding in partnership with Damen shipbuilding (The Netherlands) and BAE Systems (UK). The challenge is to understand the failure mechanisms in the presence of a saltwater environment, and to develop a predictive tool for failure strength that takes into account the joint thickness and the mode of loading (peel versus shear). The research will involve experiments into the operative failure mechanisms and the development of a model to account for the deformation and failure of the adhesive layer. Ideally, the successful applicant will have research experience in mechanical test and failure analysis and an ability to perform finite element analysis of non-linear solids.

The successful candidate must have obtained or be close to obtaining a PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related subject. Must have some research experience, and a publication record. Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £25,728 - £30,688; Research Associate: £31,604 - £38,833 Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 36 months in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
