Acoustic/elastic metamaterials consist of tailored microstructures that give rise to unusual effective properties not easily found in nature, such as negative mass density and negative modulus. The concept of metamaterials leads to a vast possibility in material design for control of wave motion. The past decade has witnessed a growing interest in the study of acoustic metamaterials and their potential engineering applications. Compared to electromagnetic metamaterials, acoustic metamaterials are still in their infancy. It is therefore the purpose of this symposium to provide a forum for active researchers in the fields of solid mechanics, composites, wave mechanics, and physics and to exchange their ideas with the hope that new ideas for further research and applications may continue to emerge.
