Postdoc Position of Power Electronics at Virginia Tech (On Power Electronics for 100 W-100 kW Ocean Energy Harvesting)

Position Summary:

This position requires a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering field with experience on power electronics design and implementation from 100 W to 100kW. As part of this position, the candidate will be expected to contribute significantly to ongoing and potential future related projects, including ocean wave energy conversion, ocean tidal and current energy conversion, offshore wind energy, and regenerative vibration control, funded by the U.S DOE, ONR, NSF, national labs, and industry. The candidate will also be engaged with other research, development and outreach activities of the Center for Energy Harvesting Materials and Systems (CEHMS).

Roles and Responsibilities:

1.    Conduct research on topics across power electronics for off-grid and grid applications, including AC/DC and DC-DC converter design, energy storage, power management, maximum power tracking, feedback control, etc.

2.    Significantly contribute to multiple concurrent projects through research design, data collection, analysis, modeling, simulation, implementation, and demonstration.

3.    Manage project activities and staff, including mentorship of doctoral, master’s, and undergraduate students.

4.    Develop new research programs and other professional duties in a timely manner.

5.    Collaborate with faculty, researchers, staff, and students in the project team at VT and from external organizations, to:

a.        Successfully complete research deliverables;

b.       Disseminate efforts and findings from research and outreach initiatives including manuscripts in peer-reviewed publications, topical conferences, symposia, and workshops.

Postdoctoral Position in Phase Field Modeling of Oxide Film Growth

The Materials Theory Group at the School of Materials Engineering of Purdue University has a postdoctoral opening in the area of phase field modeling of oxide film growth. The postdoc will use the phase field approach to investigate the growth of metal oxide films in an oxidizing environment, emphasizing the film grain morphology, composition, and stress distribution. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in phase field modeling with elastic effects and excellent computational skills. This position is part of a collaborative project with a materials research and software development company, and it will be available as early as April 1, 2021. The position will remain open until filled. Specifically, the post requires expert knowledge in experimental and/or computational mechanics of materials and/or tribology. The position is part of a large international EPSRC-SFI funded project aimed at developing next generation textile triboelectric nanogenerators (or T-TENGs) for powering of wearable electronics.  This position will focus on the mechanics and tribology of T-TENGs and will involve both modelling and experimental work.
