In Memoriam: Dr Louis Cloutier (1936-2017)

My friend and former colleague, Dr. Louis Cloutier, passed away on February 26. A long time Hydro-Quebec engineer, among other achievements, he will be remembered for his major contribution to the solution of electric power transmission mechanical problems, most notably to Aeolian vibration control, and related conductor fatigue.

A simple finding on variable amplitude (Gassner) fatigue SN curves obtained using Miner’s rule for unnotched or notched specimen

We provide a very simple result for a problem which has been often neglected (variable amplitude loading) in academia, but which is of paramount importance in real engineering situations, where fatigue is almost never "constant amplitude".

We found few cases where we could check this extremely simple result, but it worked very well.  We would welcome further verifications.

1 PhD and 2 Postdoc positions in composites and 3D printed materials @ Ghent University (Belgium)

One PhD (4 years) and two Postdoc (3 years) vacancies are available in the composites research group at Ghent University in Belgium. The different open positions deal with nondestructive testing methods for composites inspection (vibration/thermography) and fatigue of 3D printed metals. Which theory Abaqus' Contour Integral for the determination of SIFs is based on?

I am actually using Abaqus' Contour Integral for the determination of stress intensity factors. But I do not know, which theory it is based on. Is it the same like the path-independent determination of J integral? Or is there a difference?

Fatigue crack propagation

Hi, I'm trying to perform a supposedly-simple experiment on fatigue crack propagation of UHMWPE. I use a compact-tension specimen on a servopulser hidraulic testing machine. I will try to do the experiment on a fix Pmax with a varied force ratio (R) from 0.1 to 0.5. I'm having trouble in deciding the maximum force Pmax. How does one decide the amount of force applied for FCP testing? Calculation steps and so on.

WCFA2016-VFA – Workshop on Vibration Fatigue Analysis

Dear iMechanicians,

I would like to inform you about the workshop WCFA2016-VFA, which is this year organized with the focus set on Vibration Fatigue Analysis. The workshop will be held at the Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic from November 8 to November 10, 2016. The introductory lessons in the first day will be presented by Prof Darrell Socie, Prof Milan Ruzicka and Dr Jan Papuga, while the main topic - Vibration Fatigue Analysis - will follow in next two days and will be covered by Dr Neil Bishop.

Nine papers about fatigue modelling of short fiber composite

Recently, we have published a series of nine papers about modelling fatigue and damage in short fiber composites.  Together, they provide a complete description of modelling of such materials including wavy fiber composites; starting from appropriate homogenization method to component level fatigue simulation. Discussion and feedback on the papers is welcome.

The nonlinear dynamics laboratory at the University of Rhode Island has an open position for a PhD student supported through research assistantship (including tuition remittance) starting Summer or Fall 2016. Postdoctoral Research Scholar at Sichuan University and Chengdu University, China

Applications are invited for a 24 months fixed term Postdoc/Research Associate post to work as part of the NSFC project “Fatigue damage mechanism and life prediction in bone using 3D micro-CT image correlation techniques”. 

PhD vacancy (4 years) on multi-scale fatigue damage modelling of unidirectional fibre-reinforced composites @ Ghent University (Belgium)

The core idea of this fundamental research project is to develop a consistent multi-scale modelling framework for fatigue damage in unidirectionally reinforced composites. Three scales are distinguished: (i) the micro-scale, where individual fibre filaments are arranged in a polymer matrix.

PhD vacancy (4 years) on simulation and testing of short fibre-reinforced composites for application in heat exchangers @ Ghent University (Belgium)

Almost all heat exchangers are currently made of metal. A few attempts have been made to make heat exchangers from (fibre-reinforced) polymers. Switching from metal to polymer/composite can have several advantages:

Overhead Electrical Conductor fatigue testing: a new standard

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) just released a new international standard titled: "Overhead lines - Method for fatigue testing of conductors". IEC 62568. Edition 1.0 2015-07. www.iec.ch . It closely follows previous CIGRE and EPRI publications on this topic:
