Geometry of Non-Linear Continuum Mechanics

Submitted by Giovanni Romano on

This is an attempt to contribute to bring the discussion on non-linear issues in Continuum Mechanics (CM) under the comprehensive supervision of modern differential geometry (DG). Some people would say that engineers do not need so much mathematics, but such an opinion is a sure indicator of lack of knowledge of the matter. In fact I am an engineer, a University teacher and a designer in Structural Engineering and my experience is that a lot of troubles would have been saved to me by a basic training in DG.

PhD positions at the UPC-BarcelonaTech in Computational Mechanics/Numerical Analysis

Submitted by Marino Arroyo on

Six PhD positions are available at the Laboratory of Computational Methods and Numerical Analysis (http://www-lacan.upc.edu/) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-BarcelonaTech (http://www.upc.edu/) in Spain.

The four-year PhD fellowships cover the full tuition, a monthly stipend, and health insurance.

Details about the different positions can be found at http://www.lacan.upc.edu/node/49

PhD Position in Nanomaterials Science at the University of Vermont

Submitted by Fred Sansoz on

An excellent student with research expertise and interest in molecular dynamics simulation and theory of mechanical and/or thermal transport properties in nanomaterials such as nanowires, bulk nanotwinned metals and graphene, is sought to fill a new PhD opening in my group starting in Fall 2012. Interested students should send me a detailed CV with a description of past research achievements and the names of references to frederic.sansoz [at] uvm.edu.

General consitutive modeling framework for anisotropic pro-visco-hyperelastic materials?

Submitted by azadpoor on

Modeling the constitutive behavior of biological tissues often involves anisotropy, hyperelasticity, viscoelasticity, and poroelasticity. I am looking for a good monograph/paper/textbook that presents a general constitutive modeling framework where these aspects are presented in an interconnected way. Most references treat these aspects separately, perhaps devoting a chapter to every aspect.
