modelling a crack in a structure, using Ansys Workbench v11.0

Submitted by Jessica Papasidero on

hello,

I am using Ansys Workbench v11.0 to study the fracture of a structure.

I would like to add a crack in my structure, but I don' really know how to do it, since I don't have much experience of numerical simulation (actually, this is my first one in rupture mechanics).

So far, I have tried to design the crack with the Ansys Design Modeler (I have cut my piece, so that one part of it has the shape of the crack I want to study). But now, I can't manage to mesh it with Ansys Simulation.

Weak form

Submitted by surajitdas on

During the study of FEM, I found the term "weak form" of differential equation, which is the integral form of a differential equation along with the boundary conditions for a boundary value problem. Now my question is that why the term "weak" has been used.

High SIF in plane stress

Submitted by ramdas chennamsetti on

Hi all!!!

I have a very basic question in Fracture Mechanics. The question is as following.

"Stree Intensity Factor (SIF) is more in plane stress problems (plasic zone size is big) than in plane strain problems (plasic zone size is small). How do we explain this, without refering or invoking energy conecpt?"

I request to give some thoughtful explanation.

With regards,

- Ramdas

cohesive element

Submitted by llguang on

Hello everyone,I am researching the dynamic crack propagation problem using the cohesive element. At this moment, I am using the LS-DYNA (971)software's cohesive material model ,But it does't consider the penetration of bulk elements when the cohesive elements after deleted or not deleted. so the bulk will penetrate each other when under exterior dynamic load. From the literature, I know that many reserachers use the solver which is writern by themselves, and the cohesive element also writen by self. How can some kind expersist give me a tutoial ,Thanks.
