Phononic materials: controlling elastic waves in solids

The Applied Mechanics Division Executive Committee (AMD-EC) is pleased to announce the 2021 IMECE Student presentation award competition.
Motivated by roughness-induced adhesion enhancement (toughening and strengthening) in low modulus materials, we study the detachment of a sphere from a substrate in the presence of both viscoelastic dissipation at the contact edge, and roughness in the form of a single axisymmetric waviness. We show that the roughness-induced enhancement found by Guduru and coworkers for the elastic case (i.e. at very small detachment speeds) tends to disappear with increasing speeds, where the viscoelastic effect dominates and the problem approaches that of a smooth sphere.
A fully supported Ph.D. position is open immediately in Advanced Hierarchical Materials by Design Lab at the University of Alabama on multiscale modeling of materials and processes. The research goal of this project is to model the additive manufacturing process and develop new alloys for additive manufacturing. During this projects, the candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with NASA research centers, national labs, and different universities across the nation.

The 2020-2021 Harvey Prize Award is granted to Professor James R. Rice for fundamental and long-standing contributions to the fields of mechanics of materials and geophysics. For the J-integral, and for leadership that enhanced the understanding of friction and earthquakes.
It is shown in this paper, just published in J. Appl. Mech., that the observed anomalies in the Love wave dispersion in the Earth can be explained by the occurrence of slip waves.

Ranjith Kunnath
A fully funded PhD position is available as early as Spring, 2022 in Dr. Ning Zhang’s research group at the University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa), the department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics. This position is in the general area of mechanics, structural and multifunctional materials with focus on mechanical and thermal properties.
The research topics include:
(1) Polymer composites;
(2) 2D materials;
(3) Shape memory ceramics/alloys;
(4) High entropy alloys;
(5) Biomaterials.
One Ph.D. position is available in mechanics of materials/data science area in Multiscale Materials Modeling Lab at University of Arkansas. The starting date is Spring 2022.
Students who have master’s or bachelor’s degree in physics, mechanical or materials engineering with computational or experimental background are encouraged to apply.
