Number of registered users of iMechanica exceeds 20,000
As of 11 May 2010, the number of registered users of iMechanica exceeded 20,000 , the total number of posts is 8191, the total number of comments is 14557. The growth of iMechanica community remains steady since its launch.
Founded in September 2006, iMechanica aims
- to use the Internet to enhance communications among mechanicians , and
- to pave a way to evolve all knowledge of mechanics online.
In the past three years and eight months since its launch, iMechanica has embraced mechanicians from all over the world and in a wide spectrum. From renown scientists to budding scholars, from academic researchers to industrial practitioners, from government funding agencies to journal publishers/editors, to name a few.
Hosted on a server at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Science and maintained by a growing number of volunteers , iMechanica belongs to whoever uses it. If you enjoy using iMechanica, invite your colleagues and friends to join 20,000+ other mechanicians in exploring iMechanica.

It is such a pleasure to see the growth of iMechanica in a plot. May iMechanica help us meet mechanicians from everywhere.
congrats to all imechanicians and to the Imechanica team!
The curve seems linear however. In comparison with Facebook, I suspect the growth there was exponential. Why the difference of behaviour?

Facebook celebrated its sixth birthday on February 4th and announced
that it now has over 400 million members. That’s quite an accomplishment
— just a year ago, the social media giant had 150 million users.
Noting this milestone in a blog post, founder Mark Zuckerberg said:
We’ve made great progress over the last year towards
making the world more open and connected.
If Facebook was a country, it would soon have the largest population
in the world. At 400 million active users and counting, only China and
India have more inhabitants:
that last number… That’s more than half a billion
estimated users. Given Facebook’s exponential growth rate, it probably
won’t be too long before the network reaches this milestone.

Analogy to stress-strain curves

I found the user increase before 500 days was similar to a non-linear stress-strain curve with small slopes. After 500, it becomes a linear relation between users and time with a quite large slope- new "strain hardening phenomenon"?
It's hard to predict the future user increase-at least not based on "Moore's Law (of curse, not related to mechanics)"

to be honest, facebook too is only marginally exponential
I checked more carefully and in fact Facebook too is only marginally more "exponential" than "linear" . See the R^2=0.994 for exponential, and R^2=0.981 for linear.
You should check the same for imechanica. Can you do it -- I am going out to eat an italian Pizza with one of my phd students who has his birthday today, Carmine Putignano --- happy birthday to him!

Number of guests is always much more
First, congrats to the imechanica team!
Whenever I visit imechanica, I find a large number of guests. Right now, there are 6 users and 70 guests online. So, the number of people making use of imechanica is probably much much more than the number of registered users!

yes, I think your rough estimate is correct -- a factor 10 or so
One could measure the number of contacts to the site, I wonder if the imechanica team has this number too.
Anyway, as a rough estimate, I think an order of magnitude larger is correct, so probably there are about 200k "readers" of imechanica. Now, what do you expect the mechanics community can be in number? So far, it seems of the order of 1000 times smaller than Facebook. Maybe it is not too bad estimate to think that 1 out of 1000 people in the world is interested in mechanics, which means that the two community are expanding in parallel !

creating imechanica facebook group and community page
Incidentally, this makes me wonder if we should have a
facebook fan page for imechanica, and so I checked if there was one.
Apparently, there was an attempt of a facebook
group imechanica , created by Haimin
Yao (creator), so far with only 5 users!
We could
develop that, or indeed promote a facebook fan page, which I am going
to create one!
This could be useful to promote imechanica with
the community
page where I put only basic infos.
Please help to develop both by joing them, and recommend them to your facebook friends... :)
