QUESTION REGARDING FRACTURE TOUGHNESS TESTING

Zoeb Kaizar Lakdawala's picture

HI ALL

Actually I  am a Student of 2 year M. Tech. studying in S. V. National  Institute of Technology, Surat My name is Zoeb K Lakdawala. My topic for disseration is 'Implemenation of Fracture Mechanics on Pressure  Vessels". In my disseration I want to develop a code on fracture mechanics and compare it with standard Packages like ANSYS & ABAQUS.

Actually In this project work i also wanted to conduct fracture toughness test using ASTM E - 1820 for that i have prepared the specimen as per ASTM E - 399( For measuring Stress Intensity Factor) & ASTM E - 1820(For Determination of J-R curve) using material SA 516 GR 70 but the major hindrence while reading the ASTM E - 1820 is that i how can i measure dm = total measured load-line displacement.

I will be most thankful to you if you give me suggestion regarding that

Hello zoeb

I am also working with fracture toughness experiment. There are many possibilities to measure the load-displacement curve.

We used the split Hopkinson pressure bar for dynamic impact and measured the load-displacement values from classical theory.

So it depends on insturement you are employing if you want to measure the load-displacement curves experimentally.

I read Prof. C.T. Sun's paper (J.L. Tsai, C. Guo, and C.T. Sun, “Dynamic Delamination Fracture Toughness in Unidirectional

Polymeric Composites,” Composites Science and Technology, Vol. 61, 2001, pp. 87-94) and used crack gage to detect the crack

initiation time.

Thanks Chul JIn syn

for your reply can you suggest me some reference books for measuring the same

Hi all

I am planning to estimate plane-strain fracture
toughness of my material based on E1820 with using one sample. There
are two procedurs in this standrad: 1) the basic method & 2) the
resistance curve method.  I am looking for J1c and not R-curve. Do you
know if it is possible to use resistance curve method to get the
plane-strain facture toughness?

 Thank you.
