Conference
Goals and Scope
ICHMM 2011
seeks dissemination of recent, cutting edge research results as well as
in-depth discussions regarding future research directions in the challenging
subject of heterogeneous material mechanics. Sessions will focus on original
recent research developments presently underway, while invited panel
discussions aim to stimulate future research directions.
Plenary
Kick-Off Lectures will
be given by Dr. K. Lu (Institute of Metal Research, the Chinese
Academy of Sciences) and Dr. W. Curtin
(Brown University), 17:00-19:00, May 22, 2011
(Sunday).
Sessions are organized with papers addressing
various classes of heterogeneous materials, including for example metals,
composites, biomaterials, concrete, soils and rocks, porous materials and smart
materials. Topics include, but are not limited to: nanomechanics,
micromechanics, scale effects and multiscale modeling, multi-physics modeling,
microstructure-property relations, materials design, biomimetics and
biomaterials, smart materials, composite and cellular materials, geological
materials and concrete, stochastic mechanics, plasticity, creep, damage and
failure, coupled diffusion and deformation/damage, tribology, and environmental
effects involving heterogeneous material systems.
Panel
discussions will
focus on fundamental challenges in (i) crystal plasticity of microstructures,
(ii) key interfaces of materials and mechanics in heterogeneous materials,
(iii) time-scale issues in atomistic modeling, (iv) critical path issues in
materials for energy, and (v) molecular and cellular biomechanics.
Conference
Venue
Bao Dao
Resort
ICHMM 2011 will
be held at the Bao Dao resort, Chong Ming Island,
Shanghai, China. It is neighbor to and in
front of the Dong Ping National Forest Park. The resort is surrounded by a
large area of woods and meadows. All the rooms and suites are open to an
excellent woods view. The resort setting includes meals, rooms, meeting and
leisure as a whole. It is an ideal place for a large-scale conference.
Chong Ming
Island
Chong Ming Island is located in the central point of the Chinese
coastal region known as the West Pacific Bank, at the estuary of the Yangtze River. It is the largest alluvial river island
and the third largest island in China.
The island is encircled by rivers on three sides and by the East Sea
on one side. It links the majestic Yangtze River in the west to the vast East Sea.
This island has become available as the conference location due to recent construction of an 8.9 km under-water channel
and a 12 km long bridge as part of preparations for the World EXPO in Shanghai, held May to
October, 2010. It is about 40 minutes by bus from the Shanghai Pudong
International airport to Chong
Ming Island,
and another 40 minutes to the Bao Dao Resort.
Shanghai City and Shanghai
EXPO 2010
With a history of more than 700
years, Shanghai was once the financial center of
the Far East. Since the reforms that began in
the 1990s, great changes have taken place in the city. Shanghai is rapidly developing into a modern
metropolis and is considered one of the world’s leading economic, financial,
trading, and shipping centers.
Shanghai EXPO has started since
May 1 2010. The theme of Expo 2010 is "Better City,
Better Life" – representing humankind’s common desire for a better
life in future urban environments. Expo 2010 Shanghai
China
will be a grand international gathering. Over 200 nations and international
organizations have confirmed participation, as well as 70 million visitors from
home and abroad, ensuring the widest possible participation in the history of
World Expositions.
