Material selection for vibration damping

Submitted by pirexengaer on

Hi everyone,

I'm searching some solution to absorb vibration. I'm trying to find materials and their properties to compare between them and chose one to design a vibration damper. Their application will be on the base of an avionics enclosure wich is onboard of a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle).

frequency response function

Submitted by jezenarro on

Hello!!I am a new user of ABAQUS. I have a question about obtaining of the frequency response function in ABAQUS. In the first step I calculate the natural frequency using the step linear perturbation(procedure type)/frequency.I think that obtaining the frecuency response function, I need to use in the second step the steady-state dinamic, modal.I don`t get to plot the amplitude of modal-frequency graphs.I would apreciate much if someone could help me about this question.

Young's modulus of single-walled carbon nanotubes

Submitted by nyao on

We report in detail that unlike other materials, carbon nanotubes are so small that changes in structure can affect the Young's modulus. The variation in modulus is attributed to differences in torsional strain, which is the dominant component of the total strain energy. Torsional strain, and correspondingly Young's modulus, increases significantly with decreasing tube diameter and increases slightly with decreasing tube helicity.  Journal of Applied Physics 84, 1939 (1998).

S. Germain, "Memoir on the Vibrations of Elastic Plates"

I have not read the above-mentioned paper, as I have never been able to find it. However it is said to be "a brilliantly insightful paper which was to lay the foundations of modern elasticity." However, I believe it is also noteworthy for being one of the major contributions by a female mechanician prior to the modern era. For a great biography of Sophie Germain, including a fantastic quote from a letter from Carl Gauss on discovering that she was female--and not "Monsieur Le Blanc"--visit this site (from which the above quote, on the impact of her paper, came).

There are no female mechanicians listed on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechanicians but I believe it could be argued that Germain deserves a mention!
