hi, I'm a student studying ALE method. In the book of "Nonlinear Finite Elements for Continua and Structures" written by Ted Belytschko el, conservation equations which discribed in the reference configuration and current configuration are given out (see chapter 7). But how about Balance Laws in initial configuration?

Composite Solid

Submitted by msd.jacob on

Hi All,

I am analysing a fiber composite solid plate with a large and small holes. The model is meshed with C3D8R elements. The output has U and RF in global CSYS and S, E in local CSYS. I have problem in reading  S and E written in local CSYS. I know it is very simple, but I cant able to figure it out. Those who know, how to read the S and E in local CSYS, please help me. Tks in advance for your time and advice.

difficulties CONTACT problem with plasticity using ABAQUS FEA code.

Submitted by lazghabt on

Hello everyone:

1.  I have built a FEM model 2D plane strain using ABAQUS/Standard (CPE4R) elements,

2. I am  modeling the contact between a cylinder and a plate in 2D.

3. The Cylinder material is given is ELASTIC ISOTROPIC material with no plasticit E=310 GPa

4.  The plate is with a Ramberg-Osgood plasticity with a Young's modulus E=210 GPa.

5. The mesh at the the contact point is VERY refined element characteristic length is about 1 micron. (My model units are  (mm,N,sec)).

Rail corrugation: ”one hundred years of solitude”? or a true enigma?

Submitted by Mike Ciavarella on

You may remember that I promised some time ago to discuss each of the topics mentioned by Ken Johnson in his Timoshenko Medal speach. Here I take rail corrugation. Rail corrugation has been noticed at least for 100 years, but (particularly short pitch one in the range 20÷80 mm) has been considered an enigma because measured corrugation wavelength did not relate well with wear instabilitymodels.

About ABAQUS UMAT

Submitted by rrahman on

Hi

I am working on probailistic modeling of damages in composite materials. I have my own developed mathematical model for calculating damage probability. Now I am trying to use this model in ABAQUS to see the effect of damages with a certain probability. Please kindly let me know if there is any reference code or tutorial for UMAT where I can apply the damages with different probabilities.

Thanks in Advance

How to deal with the singularity in calculation of a closed shell of revolution?

Submitted by Hongping Hu on

I want to numerical calculate vibration of a closed shell of revolution with double layers. There exists Coefficient cot(θ) in the governing equation, where θ is angle between the revolving axle and normal line. Therefore, cot(θ) will incline to infinity when θ is close to zero for the vertex point on the revolving axle. How to deal with the singularity? Can you give me some advices or reference article? Thanks.

Finite Width Effect of Thin Films Buckling on Compliant Substrate

Submitted by Hanqing Jiang on

Buckling of stiff thin films on compliant substrates has many important applications ranging from stretchable electronics to precision metrology and sensors.  John Hutchinson, Zhiggang Suo, Rui Huang, Xi Chen et al. have developed nice theories for stiff thin film buckling on soft substrate.
