Finite elements based on shell theories

Hello,

Recently I faced two questions in course that I am attending:

1) Outline the salient features of different higher order shell theories.

2)Explain why some shell theories are not suitable as the basis of element formulation.

3) Discuss any limitations of elements being used in relation to their underlying formulation ( e.g use of shallow shell theory or cylindrical shell theory).

Endowed Professorships and Faculty positions in Health

Submitted by Gregory M. Odegard on

Michigan Technological University invites applicants for new tenure-track positions at any rank in the broad areas of health sciences and engineering. This campus-wide Strategic Faculty Hiring Initiative (SFHI) is projected to bring up to ten new faculty members, including possible endowed positions, to campus over the next two years to strengthen the key focus areas of biochemistry, bioengineering, bioethics, biomaterials, biomechanics, human factors, medical informatics, cell biology, physiology, and statistical genetics.

Bondary conditions of plate segment

Submitted by Mike W. Long on

Hello,

i'd like to model only one small segment of a large elastic plate. This plate is uniformly loaded by sinusoidal dynamic load.

The question is how i kann describe the boundary of this small segment, whose boundaris changes over the time. Is it possible to model the boundary conditions of this segment without consideration of its connection to the large plate.

I hope on your help.

Mike

If there is no response.....then.....

In imechanica when a blog is posted, we get good response / discussion (or sharing ideas, knowledge etc) from members. This happens many times.

If there is no response for a particular blog even after many days...then....what? It may be updated (because some members might have missed it). Even then also if there is no response, what may be done???

2 Open PhD Positions in Petroleum Geomechanics at LSU

Submitted by Arash Dahi on

I am currently seeking candidates for two PhD positions in Petroleum Engineering at Louisiana State University (LSU). The successful candidates are expected to possess a master degree in engineering or science and have experience in the area of computational mechanics or finite elements and continuum mechanics. The candidates will be working in the area of hydraulic fracturing, poroelasticity, and mechanics applied to fluid flow in fractured porous media.

Delamination mode failure

Submitted by ramdas chennamsetti on

Hi all!!!

General theories of failure of laminated composites are Tsai-Hu, Tsai-Hill, Maximum stress and maximum strain. These thoeries do not specify which component (fiber or matrix) of lamina fails.

Sigma_zz, sigma_xz and sigma_yz are out of plane stresses which cause delamination failure of laminated composite structures.

I am looking for exclusive theories of failure which govern delamination failure in laminated composites. I request those who work in this area to help.

Thanx in advance,

Regards,

- Ramdas
