Mode II fracture of an elastic-plastic sandwich layer

Submitted by Emilio Martíne… on

Dear iMechanicians,

Please find below a paper, co-authored with Ivan Cuesta and Norman Fleck, on the mode II fracture of elastic-plastic sandwich layers. The paper is part of the special issue in the Journal of Applied Mechanics dedicated to John Hutchinson's 80th anniversary and the Century Fracture Mechanics Summit.

Harnessing energy landscape exploration to control the buckling of cylindrical shells

Submitted by Teng zhang on

Abstract: Even for relatively simple thin shell morphologies, many different buckled configurations can be stable simultaneously. Which state is observed in practice is highly sensitive to both environmental perturbations and shell imperfections. The complexity and unpredictability of postbuckling responses has therefore raised great challenges to emerging technologies exploiting buckling transitions.

A postdoctoral position or a Ph.D position for data-driven computational dynamics at Kyung Hee University (2020 fall)

Submitted by jingyun on

The M&S Lab in Department of Mechanical Engineering, Kyung Hee University (South Korea) is recruiting highly motivated a postdoctoral researcher (starting 2020 summer) and a Ph.D student (starting 2020 September). The candidate is expected to be highly self-motivated, independent, and high-level coding skill (For examples, Fortran, JAVA, C/C++, Python, matlab, etc). Excellent publication record additionally requires to the postdoctoral research position.

A Delicate State of Instability

Submitted by oliver oreilly on

Dear Colleague,

It is well known that the straight configuration of a flexible vertical riser conveying fluid destabilizes in a divergence-type buckling instability once the velocity of the transporting fluid exceeds a critical speed. To compute the critical velocity, the dynamics of small amplitude perturbations to the straight configuration are computed. If the perturbations are sufficiently small and the transport speed is above a critical value, then the instability of the vertical riser can be detected.
