Nonlocal Micromechanics of Composites of both Random and Periodic Structures (Background, Opportunities and Prospects)

Submitted by Valeriy Buryachenko on

An extended abstract dedicated to nonlocal (in the sense of either Eringen or Silling) micromechanics is attached. It can’t be considered as a review in any sense. It is just a personal vision on a new area of micromechanics, in particularly based on the author’s publications (references on hundreds related papers can be found in the referred publications). The style of the abstract is plausible rather than rigorous that willfully used by the author just for initiation of discussions in the new prospective area of micromechanics.

Basic algorithm of thermodynamics (BAT)

Submitted by Zhigang Suo on

I have just taught an undergraduate course on thermodyanmics and written up my lectures as a book. The book is posted as a google doc. If you cannot access the google doc, here is a PDF file of the book. The following paragraphs describe my approach. I hope to hear about your experience with thermodynamics. Please leave your comments below. Please help me hear from more people by forwarding this post. Thank you.

A steel sphere impacting and propagating in water

Submitted by D.Rittel on

A small steel sphere is launched at 153 m/s through a water tank. This is a nice visualization of cavity expansion ion a fluid. Note the rebound as the sphere bounces back and hits the water tank again.

The movie exceeds the 20Mb limit, sio it is available on youtube:

Three-year Postdoc position to study the biophysics of aerial electroreception in arthropods

Submitted by Isaac.Chenchiah on

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available in the groups of Professor Daniel Robert at the School of Biological Sciences and Dr Isaac Chenchiah at the School of Mathematics. The post is funded for three years and is supported by a grant from the UK BBSRC. The project is entitled “The biophysics of aerial electroreception in arthropods” and seeks to elucidate the biophysical sensory mechanisms subtending electroreception in air.
