Mini-symposium “Fracture and Instabilities in Soft Materials” on ICF13

Submitted by Wei Hong on

We are organizing a mini-symposium, "Fracture and Instabilities in Soft Materials", on the 13th International Conference on Fracture, which will be held during June 16-21, 2013 in Beijing, China. We would like to invite you to submit an abstract on your recent research findings in related areas. The deadline for abstract submission has now been extended to October 31, 2012.  Instructions on abstract submission can be found at http://www.icf13.org/. The conference anouncement is at http://www.icf13.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/final0830.pdf.

Two PhD positions in computational and experimental multiscale mechanics of materials – Eindhoven, Netherlands

Submitted by RonPeerlings on

Our Mechanics of Materials Group at Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands, in association with Materials innovation institute M2i, has two openings for talented PhD students in the field of multiscale mechanics of materials. They are part of a project on multiscale hygro-mechanics of paper. The industrial background of the project is in inkjet-printing. One opening is on experimental characterisation and the other on multiscale computational modelling.

For exceptionally suited young doctors we may consider changing the positions into PostDoc positions.

Discuss how safe are they? Discuss the hidden pollution caused by solar panels.

Submitted by Omololu Oyebola on

Recently solar energy conversion has been used to generate electricity. The generation of electricity using photo voltaic (PV) modules or panels is the most common method, because  PV modules do not emit toxic gases and greenhouse gases as compared to energy generation using fossil fuel, they are considered relatively safe [1]

Does fluid structure interaction classified as a sub-field within fluid mechanics?

Submitted by ZJ Li on

hi, I am a student in Engineering Mechanics.  I would like to find a lab or a  professor related to fluid structure interaction(FSI) for grad study in USA.  does FSI is part of fluid mechanics discipline? or which is the right department I should search for?

I have looked through some grad schools, I found some similary key words, such as aeroelasticity,  micro aero vehicles, swimmers, environemantl fluid mechanics, not that close anyway.
