Finite element simulation of substrate and film

Submitted by Lang Zhou on

Hello Everybody here :

I am going to use ANSYS to do some finite element simulations of interface crack between

substrate and film and the residual stress of substrate and film. I don’t how to define the interface of the substrate and film in finite element model. How to connect the substrate and film? Just glue the substrate and film or use other element to deal with it? Thanks a lot.

Mechanical Vibrations textbook

Please recommend a good undergraduate textbook for 'mechanical vibrations'...

Thanks in advance.

what a hypocritical website this is.... almost 200 reads and not one comment. high academic qualifications of most members seems to be creating an elastic sheath of EGO!

Thanks for reading this too. :)

Isotropy: Updated Lagrangian Vs Total Lagrangian

Submitted by Jayadeep U. B. on

Dear All,

I have seen it being mentioned that the material at an updated configuration in an Updated Lagrangian Formulation (say in FEM) may not remain isotropic, even if the reference configuration was isotropic.  However, I have not seen any detailed discussion on the matter.

Hence, I would request your comments on:

Non-linear buckling analysis - complex loading

Submitted by ramdas chennamsetti on

Hi all,

I have attached a single slide ppt file with this blog. In this slide, there is a hollow cylinder subjected to internal pressure and non-uniform axial load. All the translations at the bottom of the cylinder are fixed. As a whole the cylinder is subjected to a complex loading. The cylinder is modeled using SHELL elements in ANSYS. Now I know how to carry out non-linear buckling analysis in ANSYS.

Effect of mechanical pre-stretch on the stabilization of dielectric elastomer actuation

Submitted by Bo Li on

A dielectric elastomer is capable of giant electromechanical actuation but fails at breakdown due to instability under certain conditions with a small deformation. By applying a mechanical pre-stretch, one obtains a stabilized large actuation.
