Buckling
It is known that the if the coloumn is long and slender enough, then under axial compressive loading, the column buckles..
But i am wonder, why buckling happens at all?
Can anyone put a light on this.

We all know Euler buckling of a beam under axial thrust, but can buckling occur in an elastic structure in which all elements are subject to tensile dead loading?
We provide a positive answer to this question, see http://www.youtube.com/user/RoyalSociety#p/u/0/EKngs1vvcJU
Dear All,
I am presently deducting formula for a metallic circular plate with large deflection. Can anybody help me how to dedcut the membrane strain energy of a circular plate?
All information on reference or textbook are all welcome.
Thanks.
Jason
The use of Microindentation has proven to be a crucial tool for rock mechanics related studies. For example, Microindentation has been used to advance studies in excavation by allowing further understanding of rock mass properties and its separation. Microindentation has been used to advance drilling studies to improve drill heads and improve drilling procedures. Microindentation has also been used to study chalk and powder formation from minerals.
Paper surface topography is vital to the intended use and quality of the product. To control paper product quality it will heavily rely upon quantifiable, reproducible and reliable surface measurement. Precise surface measurement and evaluation of a paper product can lead to the best selection of processing and control measures. The Nanovea 3D Non-Contact Profilometer utilize chromatic confocal technology with unmatched capability to measure paper surfaces.
Dear All,
I am writing to introduce to you a general-purpose composite beam solver, GEBT, which can capture all the geometrical nonlinearity obtainable by the six fundamental deformation modes (extension, torsion, bending in two directions, and shearing in two directions), and the coupling between these fundamental deformantion modes, such as extension-twist coupling commonly existing in initially twisted rotorblades. The features of GEBT are:

SoftInWay announces a free webinar on advanced approaches to multistage centrifugal compressor design, to be held on Thursday, March 31, 2011, at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. EST.
Multistage centrifugal compressors are widely used in gas pipeline systems and chemical industry. Defining optimal design parameters is critically important for saving energy at unit operation because these machines have high mass flow rate and significant total capacity.
If someone (or you know someone) has done substantial Python programming for his/her PhD research and now looking for post-doctoral position, I would encourage him/her to response the post of my professor in Numpy community (http://mail.scipy.org/pipermail/numpy-discussion/2011-February/054791.html).
Those who have used Python for course works or for research purpose they can use our Python IDE named "SciPylot". It has more traits than any other currently available Python IDE's. Installation guide is added in docs. In near future it will be released under open source license, therefore you can use as your own and free to distribute it. Hoping you will love to do Python programming in "SciPylot" environment. This is compatible with Windows, Linux, and OS X.
