A PhD position is available as early as Fall, 2021 in Dr. Ning Zhang’s group at the University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa). This position is in the general area of mechanics, structural and multifunctional materials with focus on mechanical and thermal properties.

The research topics include:

(1) Hypersonic flight materials;

(2) 2D materials;

(3) Shape memory ceramics/alloys;

(4) High entropy alloys;

(5) Biomaterials.

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (http://mie.njit.edu) at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (http://www.njit.edu) has an opening for the fully funded Ph.D. position.  The position will start in Fall 2021 (September 2021). When a soft mechanical metamaterial, consisting of a regular array of representative volume elements (RVE), is stressed up to a large strain, the delicately tailored behavior of the RVE does not prevail in the metamaterial due to boundary effect and manufacturing imperfections. A metamaterial sheet comprising RVEs designed for snapping-back behavior exhibits random snapping-through instability when uniaxially stretched. We conceptualize that loss of representativeness of RVE can be avoided by introducing fibre reinforcement to regulate boundary conditions.
