Solvay Workshop 27-29 August 2018 | Mechanics of Slender Structures

Submitted by Pedro Reis on

Dear Colleagues,

The organization of the Solvay Workshop: "Mechanics of Slender Strucures in Physics, Biology and Engineering: From failure to functionality" (27-29 August, 2018, ULB, Brussels, Belgium), is going well and we are excited by the substantial number of good quality submissions that we have received.

However, following many requests, we are pleased to extend the deadline for abstract submission to: April 15, 2018.

Please note that, due to organizational reasons, further extension of the deadline will not be possible.

Postdoc Position on computational poromechanics

Submitted by WaiChing Sun on

Dear colleagues,

There is one postdoc opening in my research group. The research topic is on computational hydro-mechanics of porous media across temporal scales.

Candidates must have established records on constitutive modeling and publication record. Programming experience is required. Experience in contact mechanics, level set and/or meshless method is a plus but not required.

The starting date is flexible. More information can be found at

Pedestrian bridge collapse in Florida

Submitted by Biswajit Banerjee on

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=12013879

Does anyone know more about the causes of that collapse?

Now that we supposedly know so much about mechanics, why does a small-span bridge like that collapse?

It it because we are optimizing prematurely based on false confidence in numerical models?
