A PhD position is available in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The research project is in the multiscale modeling of damage and fracture. Candidates should have a strong background and interests in continuum mechanics and finite elements modeling. Programming experience in Fortran or C++ is a big plus. The starting date for this position is August 2018.
Topology optimization is used to obtain a magnetic source distribution providing levitation of a diamagnetic body or type I superconductor with maximized thrust force. We show that this technique identifies non-trivial source distributions and may be useful to design devices based on non-contact magnetic suspension and other magnetic devices, such as micro-magneto-mechanical devices, high field magnets etc.
Recently, there was a big competition announced for rough elastic adhesive contact --- by Martin Muser as organizer. This was published in Tribology Letter, involved the effort of many groups in the world, and finally got even a commentary in Science by Rob Carpick.
