Dr. Asha Nurse from NIST will receive the inaugural Journal of Applied Mechanics Award for her paper "A model of force generation in a three-dimensional toroidal cluster of cells" (Journal of Applied Mechanics, v 79, article 051013, 2012).

ARECOR patents ground breaking heat stable adenovirus vaccine technology

Submitted by sharly on

ARECOR announces today a significant leap forward to enabling liquid-stable versions of live-virus containing products, used widely in vaccines and gene therapy products. Creative biogene has patented technology that enables liquid storage of adenovirus and removes an important limitation to more widespread use.

PhD position "Carbone interphases in SiC/SiC composites"

Submitted by Vladislav Yastrebov on

We are looking for PhD candidates to study interfaces in SiC/SiC fiber composites. The project is in collaboration with CEA and Centre des Matériaux, MINES ParisTech under the supervision of Marie-Hélène Berger (MINES ParisTech), Cédric Sauder (DMN/SRMA/LTMEX) and Sylvie Poissonnet (DMN/SRMP).

Title : "Influence of Carbone interphases in SiC/SiC composites based on Hi-Nicalon S and Tyranno SA3 fibers"

Analysis of microstructural induced enhancement of electromechanical coupling in soft dielectrics

Submitted by Stephan Rudykh on

Electroactive soft elastomers require huge electric field for a meaningful actuation. We demonstrate, by means of numerical simulation, that this can be dramatically reduced and large deformations can be achieved with suitably designed heterogeneous actuators. The mechanism by which the enhancement is attained is illustrated with the aid of both idealized and periodic models.
