Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU): 2012 Summer Program on Complex Materials at the University of Vermont

Undergraduate students are encouraged to participate in experimental
and theoretical studies of the properties of complex materials. This
intensive summer program takes place each year at the University of
Vermont (USA), funded in part through the Research Experiences for
Undergraduates (REU) Program of the National Science
Foundation. Undergraduate students from all institutions are invited
to apply to the UVM Summer Program on Complex Materials. Of particular interest is a project in my group on the study of nanoscale plasticity in metallic materials using atomistic computer simulation. Your application must arrive at the University of Vermont on or before April 6, 2012.

FEAP umat routines

Hi all,

I am using FEAP 8.2 in my university, and have to write a user material routine, but there is no clear guideline/example about which files to modify for this purpose. Sorry to say, the programmer's manual is very short, and very little detail is there.

The old tutorials/examples based on FEAP (7.x) are no longer helpful because the FEAP 8.2, 8.3 source code has changed considerably (atlease the files in user folder), hence the novice can get mad after trying for many weeks to figure out the way for doing this.

Mike Ciavarelli and I discussed the possibility of doing a comparison of Italian and British Universities. On reflection, I could not decide where to begin but wrote the attached. It is part personal experience, part history and part Charles Dickens who was born 200 years ago today. If you don't understand the connection, read on.

Thermal problem !

Dear All !

I had one non-understood problem when i made thermal excerise as below : Analysis in ANSYS

"One closed box with bonded-contact parts which was placed in 50 C ambient temperature. I made boundary as Convection with simplied case film coeffient and 50 C ambient temperature. Then i analyzed with two cases of Box material.

First, Box material is Composite with 50(W/m.k) Isotropic Thermal Conduction. Second, Box material is Cast Iron with 0.48(W/m.k) Isotropic Thermal Conduction.
