The design of the vaned diffuser of a centrifugal compressor is still based on a considerable amount of empiricism in its design methodology. Parameters such as area ratio and blockage, which are more relevant to conical diffusers, are used in conventional design practice.

PhD position in Multiscale Modeling of the Synthesis Process of Nanomaterials
A PhD position is open for fall 2017 in Advanced Hierarchical Materials by Design Lab at Louisiana Tech University on multiscale modeling of the synthesis process of nanomaterials. The candidates must have a degree in Mechanical Engineering or related fields. Having a background in theoretical and computational mechanics, specifically continuum mechanics and finite element modeling, such as COMSOL, is a PLUS. Familiarity with the software package ParaView is desired.
Postdoctoral Fellowship in Computational Mechanics
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellowship, attached to the South African Research Chair in Computational Mechanics, and tenable at the Centre for Research in Computational and Applied Mechanics (CERECAM), University of Cape Town, South Africa.
Conditions of award: Eligible applicants must hold a PhD in computational mechanics or a related discipline. The PhD degree must have been granted within the last five years, or have been submitted for examination. In the latter case evidence to this effect must be provided.
Calculation of Compression Stresses for Open Cell Foams
I am investigating the effect of different structural properties on mechanical behavior of open-cell foams using compression tests. The structural properties that I have been considering are cell size, pore size, strut thickness as well as relative density. I am struggling on which surface area to consider for calculating the compression stress values, the "apparent" area which contains struts and pores (calculated by external dimensions of the specimens) or the "real" area which contains the struts only (and not pores).
CEE Department Chair Opening at GA Tech
The College of Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology is seeking nominations and applications for the position of the Karen and John Huff Chair of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE).

On a systematic approach for cracked rotating shaft study: breathing mechanism, dynamics and instability
We present a systematic approach to deal with the modelling and analysis of the cracked rotating shafts behaviour. We begin by revisiting the problem of modelling the breathing mechanism of the crack.
Here we consider an original approach based on the form we give to the energy of the system and then identify the mechanism parameters using 3D computations with unilateral contact conditions on the crack lips.
