The Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Systems Engineering invites applications at the Assistant Professor level from outstanding individuals with demonstrated expertise or research potential in Advanced Solid Mechanics applied to Extreme Environments. Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to, loading of materials as a result of in-air or underwater blast or explosion, implosion of structures, impact mechanics, dynamic response of materials under extreme temperatures or pressures, saline or maritime conditions, and dynamic fracture fragmentation. Applicants are expected to have either a strong experimental background, or be expert in the computational modeling of solids under extreme loading conditions.

We seek faculty members with potential to become international leaders in this field. In addition to building an independent research program, the successful candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in the activities of the newly created National Institute for Undersea Vehicle Technology (NIUVT.US).

We seek to fill this tenure-track, academic-year, position, in either the Fall of 2019 or in the Spring of 2020. Interested applicants can learn more about the department by visiting its web site (mcise.uri.edu).

The successful candidate will join an already strong solid mechanics program, and will be expected to establish a nationally and internationally recognized research program. She/He will have earned a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering or related fields. Applicants must be US citizens or US nationals (Permanent Residents).

Required Qualifications

1.       An earned doctorate in Mechanical Engineering or related fields at the time of appointment.

2.       Demonstrated ability to teach at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.

3.       Demonstrated record of scholarly achievement evidenced by publications, presentations, or awards.

4.       Demonstrated evidence working with diverse groups (not limited to race, ethnicity, and gender).

5.       Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.

6.       Demonstrated proficiency in oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

1.       Research in solid mechanics under extreme conditions.

2.       Ability to teach solid mechanics courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

3.       Research publications in professional journals commensurate with experience.
