Research Fellowship in Engineering - Cambridge

The Maudslay-Butler Research Fellowship in Engineering was established to encourage the highest quality of research in any area of Engineering. The Research Fellow will develop and benefit from close links with the University’s Department of Engineering. The Maudslay Trust, which supports the Research Fellowship, commemorates Henry Maudslay, a pioneering mechanical engineer.  We welcome applications from any candidates who have recently completed a Ph.D. or who will be expected to complete their Ph.D. in any aspect of Engineering around 1 October 2022. The Fellowship will be for three yearsThe holder will be expected to do a limited amount of undergraduate supervision for the College, but would require the permission of the Governing Body to undertake other paid work.  The stipend will be in the range of £24,174 to £27,116 p.a, depending on whether the successful candidate has been awarded their Ph.D.

Research Fellows are offered subsidised accommodation, in College if unaccompanied, in College-owned flats or houses if partnered; where accommodation is not required the Maudslay-Butler Research Fellow will be provided with a study in College. Research Fellows, like every Fellow of the College, are members of the Governing Body, and enjoy a range of benefits and privileges as well as responsibilities. These include seven free meals per week at High Table, access to a Fellows’ Research Fund and eligibility to apply for support for conferences or workshops Fellows organise in Cambridge.

The Research Fellowship is supported by the Maudslay Society and Trust, the Trustees of which meet annually in Pembroke and take a strong interest in the Research Fellowship, by the Butler Fund and by Pembroke College. A number of former Maudslay Research Fellows now hold Official Fellowships at Pembroke, which has a particularly strong tradition in Engineering. Current Fellows in the subject include Professor Silvana Cardoso, Professor Gábor Csányi, Professor Vikram Deshpande, Dr John Durrell, Professor Andrea Ferrari, Professor Norman Fleck and Dr Guillaume Hennequin.
