Assistant Professor

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

The Department of Mechanical Engineering seeks an outstanding individual for a tenure-track faculty position in Mechanics.  The appointment is expected to be at the assistant professor level; in an exceptional case, a senior faculty appointment may be possible. Faculty duties include teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, development of an independent, internationally-recognized research program, and supervision of student research.

Candidates should have a strong foundation in Solid Mechanics and/or Structural Mechanics, and must hold an earned Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field by the beginning of the appointment. Candidates must have demonstrated strength and ability to advance the frontiers of research in the domains of modeling, experimentation, and/or computation. Broad research areas of particular interest include: fundamental studies of the mechanics of materials at the micro/nanoscale addressing the development of novel material models and robust methods of analysis, computation, and experimentation that probe deeply into multi-scale and multi-physics phenomena in new material systems; mechanics and dynamics of large scale structural systems addressing the development of novel experimental and simulation methodologies to develop safe, lightweight, robust and cost-effective structures for  operation  under extreme  environments and  loading conditions encountered in the energy, defense, space, and transportation (automotive, ocean, aerospace) industries.

Applicants should send a curriculum vita, a research statement, a teaching statement, and copies of not more than three publications. They should also arrange for four individuals to submit letters of recommendation on their behalf. This information must be entered electronically at the following site: http://search-meche.mit.edu

Applications received by December 31, 2009, will receive full consideration. The intended start date is  July 1, 2010, or thereafter.
