Large EPSILON 3D
CAE system for strength analysis at large strains redistribution.
Within research and development work with
the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation MSU Mechanics
and Mathematics Faculty has developed a multi-platform 3D prototype of the
software for computational modelling of strain concentrators generation in a
loaded body.
A thin film subject to compressive strain can either bend (for large strain gradient) or wrinkle (for small strain gradient). The bending is traditionally used in thermostats (bimetal stripes), but couple of years ago, it was extended to the nanoscale thin films which can bend and roll-up to tubes with defined number of rotations. The wrinkles are also rather common in macro- and microscale thin films.
Here, we developed an equilibrium phase diagram for the shape of
compressively strained free-hanging films by total strain energy
minimization.
I have carried out several coupon tests (rectangular coupons similar to
those of ASTM E8). Some of these tests have kind of weird behavior. The
problem arises when I simulate results with ABAQUS. It goes pretty well
until a few steps after necking. Test and ABAQUS results match exactly
until several steps before fracture. After this point, there is a
discrepancy between results and my attempts in capturing the observed
behavior was unsuccessful. (around 10% or more plastic strain).
