One Ring to Bind Them...Two Rings to Rule Them

Submitted by giorgio_carta on

In this paper, we discuss two problems concerning scattering and localisation of flexural waves in structured elastic plates. Firstly, we compare the scattering amplitudes of waves in a thin plate, generated by a point source, due to a single mass and to a large number of smaller masses, having the same equivalent mass and located around a circle. We show that in the second case, the scattering can be reduced, in particular in the medium- and high-frequency regimes.

Transmission and localisation in ordered and randomly-perturbed structured flexural systems

Submitted by Giorgio Carta on

The paper presents a novel analysis of localisation and transmission properties of randomly-perturbed flexural systems. Attention is given to the study of propagation regimes and the connection with localised resonance modes in the context of Anderson's localisation. The analytical study is complemented with numerical simulations relevant to the design of efficient vibration isolation systems.

Dynamic response and localisation in strongly damaged waveguides

Submitted by Giorgio Carta on

In this paper, we investigate the formation of band-gaps and localisation phenomena in an elastic strip nearly disintegrated by an array of transverse cracks. We analyse the eigenfrequencies of finite, strongly damaged, elongated solids with reference to the propagation bands of an infinite strip with a periodic damage.

Dear colleagues,

I would like to bring to your attention the advanced course on Modeling of localized inelastic deformation that will be taught by Milan Jirasek in Prague, Czech Republic on 15-19 September 2014. More detailed information on the course is posted at http://mech.fsv.cvut.cz/~milan/course2014.html. We are looking forward to seeing you in Prague!
