How to add a residual stress field as initial condition for ABAQUS

Submitted by Hiton Zhang on

I am trying to construct the existing residual stress and strain field, which has been obtained in the previous themal-elastic-plastic analysis in a structure into Abaqus V.6.5 so that the influence of post heat treatment and restrain conditions on the distortion can be analyzed. I tried to use INITIAL CONDITIONS: TYPE=TEMPERATURE, FILE=filename...to add the temperature field, but I don't know how I can add the residual stress field as the initial coniditon. Does anyone know how to do this ?!!.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Best regards

We need a travelling long distance microscope for measurement of crack length

Submitted by kaslantas on

Hi

I am looking for a travelling long distance microscope for measurement of crack length. I will use this microscope on Instron fatigue test machine. I found some long distance microscopes on the web. But they are not appropriate for us. I attached a figure showing the travelling microscope that I would like to buy.

Do you have any suggestion about it? Where can I find it?

Thanks

Research on the plasticity/damage coupling model using continuum damage mechanics

Submitted by pfliu@zju.edu.cn on

Currently, i am now attempting to establish a plasticity/damage coupling model using continuum damage mechanics for complex metal structures such as steel pressure vessel, which can be implemented using finite element analysis. The model can predict the progressive failure and damage evolution as well as the crack initiation and propogation due to large plastic deformation of metal structures. Who can give me some suggestion or idea?

NIST's Technology Innovation Program (TIP) Announces First Competition

Submitted by Ken P. Chong on

ASTRA is delighted to report that the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is seeking proposals for high-risk research projects to develop innovative technologies for inspecting, monitoring and evaluating critical components of the nation's roadways, bridges, and drinking and wastewater systems. The competition for cost-shared research and development (R&D) support released today is the first to be announced by NIST's newly established Technology Innovation Program (TIP).

Are all 3D-Cracks mix-mode cracks?

Submitted by Y. Wang on

I followed this blog with interest for several weeks before I decide to ask my first question. As a newcomer in fracture mechanics, I got confused with a FE-Analysis several days ago, which calcultes the J-Integral of a 3D-crack. Ich transferred the J-Integral calculated using FEM (ADINA) to K (stress intensity factor) and found that the calculated FE-Value is 50% greater than the value acording to the IWM-Methode, which is developed to calculate the K-factors für crack in cylinders.
