Change of basis for deviatoric second order tensors

Submitted by sykledust on

Dear mechanicians

I remember reading somewhere that someone had a proof of the following:

Given a deviatoric/traceless second order tensor it is possible to find a basis for which all the normal/direct components equal zero.

For 2d this is easy: a basis rotated 45deg wrt. the eigenbasis.

The proof concerned 3d and it may have been Gurtin that had it in one of his books (sometihng tells me "The Linear Theory of Elasticity" (1972) as I don't have access to this one), but I'm not certain.

Post-doctoral position at the University of Texas at Austin

Submitted by Ravi-Chandar on

The
Center for Mechanics of Solids, Structures and Materials has immediate openings
for two post-doctoral positions, dealing with (i) laboratory experiments on hydraulic
fracture and (ii) ductile failure in metals. The primary focus in both
investigations is on performing laboratory experiments that are then followed
by appropriate analyses. Candidates with a strong background in solid mechanics
and experience in experimental solid mechanics are encouraged to contact Professor

Unknown error with abaqus 6.122 with user subroutines

Submitted by mannesantana on

I have been trying to run an analysis with the user subrouting UMAT in abaqus 6.12. I have microsoft visual studio 10.0.40219.1 and fortran 10.1.034. I think I linked the compiler correctly, and the path variable should have all the necessary adresses. However, when I run the verification cpp_make, fortran_make, and std_user show errors. here is the fortran_make.txt file:

Analysis time problem when combining UEL and UMAT

Submitted by Roche on
Hi,

I have a model which includes damage propagation, heat transfer and effect of humidity. For damage analysis I'm using a UEL, and for the rest I'm doing a coupled thermal- displacement(CTD) analysis using UMAT and UEXPAN. The analysis starts with applying a load of humidity and temperature from 0 to a final value, and then in STEP2 I apply a cyclic load in a same range.
