A Finite Element Method for Transient Analysis of Concurrent Large Deformation and Mass Transport in Gels

Submitted by Hanqing Jiang on

A gel is an aggregate of polymers and solvent molecules.  The polymers crosslink into a three-dimensional network by strong chemical bonds, and enable the gel to retain its shape after a large deformation.  The solvent molecules, however, interact among themselves and with the network by weak physical bonds, and enable the gel to be a conduit of mass transport.  The time-dependent concurrent process of large deformation and mass transport is studied by developing a finite element method.

Viscoelastic properties

Submitted by Mamilla Ravi Sankar on

Hi I am new to this blog as well as new to Viscoelasticity.  I have some basic quiries on viscoelasticity...as I am beginner to this area.

I am working on a polymer viscoelastic fluid filled with abrasive (Silicon carbide particles) for finishing of metal surfaces. This composition (polymer viscoelastic fluid + abrasive particles) placed in a cylinder and pushed through the hollow cylinderical workpiece with certain extrusion pressure excerted by piston. Due to piston pressure, the abrasives in the composition will abrade the workpiece surface.

Buckling of thin walled cylindrical shell

Submitted by Himayat Ullah on

I am analyzing a steel thin walled cylidrical shell subjected to axial compression against buckling.I performed both eigen value linear and nonlinear buckling analyses using ANSYS.The buckling load is less than the material yield limit and is therefore elastic buckling.

One of my colleague argues that the shell will regain its original shape after the buckling load is removed,as its is elastic buckling. My plea is that the shell has passed the limit point (buckling load) and it is global buckling and no shape recovery will occur after the load removal.

Ansys Shell181

Submitted by maajidchishti on

Hi All

I am trying to use Shell181 elements to model carbon/epoxy unidirectional composites. When tried to use anisotropic material model ansys wants me to enter coefficients D11 to D21. I am not sure how to calculate the value of these coefficients or where to get their value from. Some help in this regard will be much appreciated. Thank you

Ansys Help

Submitted by maajidchishti on

Hi All

I have just started my postgraduation in aerospace composites. I am new to FE of composites and required serious help in learning composite modelling. It will great if someone can help me in starting up. If you know any websites or books which have examples which I can go through to learn modelling of composites, please let me know. Thanks for your help.

My boss Zheng says every one of our group should own a blog ,then let other person know who I am and what I do.Several weeks ago I applied this blog in imechanica, and now begin to write something about my research, and also my life.
