I hope that the following paper is of interest to you. We use for the first time Gurtin (2004) gradient plasticity theory to investigate crack tip mechanics, revealing the existence of an elastic core adjacent to the crack tip, resembling a dislocation-free zone. Also, we show that the combination of strain gradient hardening and dislocation blockage can rationalise brittle fracture in elastic-plastic material interfaces.
Postdoc positions are available in the group of Prof. JG Zhu at Jiangsu University, Zhenjiang, China. Those possessing PhDs in the area of solid experimental mechanics are sought. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in artificial intelligence on experimental measurements and nondestructive techniques.

Introduction
We have an open PhD position in the areas of perception, planning, and control of autonomous systems in DSIM lab. Highly motivated applicants with prior experience in robotics, control and/or machine learning and strong programming skills and mathematical background are encouraged to apply. Simultaneous improvements of strength and toughness in topologically interlocked ceramics, Mirkhalaf, Zhou, Barthelat, PNAS, 2018
Novelty/impact/significance:
Develop a topologically interlocked material (TIM) design that is tougher (25-50X) and stronger (1.2X) than the monolithic plates with the same material (increasing impact resistance without sacrificing strength/toughness).
We seek a full-time Ph.D. student to work on the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of nickel-based superalloys in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alabama. The position will start in January 2021 and will be for four years. It will be funded through a new NSF project on surface engineering of the nickel-based superalloys. The goal is to explore and understand the strengthening and precipitate interactions.
