How to Realize Volume Conservation During Finite Plastic Deformation

Volume conservation during plastic deformation is the most important feature and should be realized in elastoplastic theories. However, it is found in this paper that an elastoplastic theory is not volume conserved if it improperly sets an arbitrary plastic strain rate tensor to be deviatoric. We discuss how to rigorously realize volume conservation in finite strain regime, especially when the unloading stress free configuration is not adopted in the elastoplastic theories.

This symposium is part of the 2018 SEM Annual Conference & Exposition held at Hyatt Regency Greenville, South Carolina, USA, June 4-7, 2018. This conference marks the 75th Anniversary of SEM and will be a special meeting.

Ph.D. Student Positions in Computational Materials and Mechanics

Several Ph.D. student positions are available in Professor El-Azab’s group with the School of Materials Engineering, Purdue University. The group performs advanced theoretical and computational research in the areas of mesoscale plasticity and dislocation dynamics, radiation effects in materials, microstructure evolution, phase field method development, and computational methods for materials science and mechanics. Applicants with MS in mechanical, aerospace, or materials engineering, with background in microstructure science, continuum mechanics and elasticity, numerical methods or computational techniques such as finite element method are highly preferred. Knowledge of an advanced programming languages such as Fortran or C++ is required. Exceptional applicants with BS degree will also be considered. The openings are for fall 2018 semester but those who wish start in the spring or summer 2018 will be accommodated. Postdoctoral Position At Northwestern University

A postdoctoral associate position is available immediately at the Computational Nanodynamics Laboratory at Northwestern University with Prof. Sinan Keten. This research project focuses broadly on the atomistic and multi-scale modeling of biomolecular materials such as nanocellulose and their interfaces with polymers. A Ph.D. in a related field is required for this position. Expertise in atomistic and molecular modeling techniques (molecular dynamics, density functional theory, coarse-grained molecular simulations) is required. Additionally, a strong background in soft matter research (polymer science, biophysics, or related areas) is highly desired. Interested candidates should send a CV, a summary of research interests, contact information of three references, and three most relevant publications as a single pdf file to s-keten [at] northwestern.edu. Evaluations will begin immediately, and the start date is flexible.

Abaqus User defined Routines

I have been using an Abaqus dll created using a user-defined routine. Things work well on a serial case. The issue comes when I try to use it in parallel. I am trying to do this on windows 7. The error I get is

forrtl: severe (59): list-directed I/O syntax error, unit 12,

in Fortran I/O but I do not get this error when I run the simulation serially. Any ideas will be helpful.

The ideal candidates should have a particular interest in conducting interdisciplinary research at the interface of computational mechanics, materials science and uncertainty quantification. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to) stochastic modeling and computational frameworks for large-scale nonlinear materials and systems, statistical inverse problems and multiscale approaches.
