Seminal research work: in-situ mechanical testing under electron microscope

Submitted by Amit Pandey on

A lot work has been done/published in the area of in-situ mechanical testing using electron microscopy. Please list which, according to what you feel has had a significant impact. Here are two in my opinion:

 Uchic, M. D., Dimiduk, D. M., Florando, J. N., & Nix, W. D. (2004). Sample dimensions influence strength and crystal plasticity. Science305(5686), 986-989.

Bioinspiration and biointegration

Submitted by Zhigang Suo on

The nervous system has long been an inspiration for the engineer.  Here is an example in a popular textbook on neuroscience.  When a person steps on a nail, the sensor in his foot sends a signal to his brain, the brain sends a signal to his muscle, and he lifts his foot.  The example illustrates the sensor, actuator and processor in the nervous system.

postdoctoral position - isogeometric analysis

Submitted by sangalli on

IMATI-CNR and the Mathematics Department of the University of Pavia offer a postdoc position on isogeometric analysis. This research project focuses on the design and implementation of innovative isogeometric methods for solid/fluid mechanics.  In particular the target applications are related to

- nearly-incompressible and fibered materials

- fluids in geological formations

This research project is partially supported by the private sector, and is supervised by Annalisa Buffa and Giancarlo Sangalli.
