THE MOST CITED SCIENTIFIC PAPERS IN SOLID AND COMPUTATIONAL MECHANICS

I posted this survey in Applied Mechanics Research and Researchers on 16 April 2006, based on a survey of Web of Science. A paper making the list satisfied the following conditions:

  • It is in the areas of solid mechanics, mechanics of materials, or computational mechanics, and
  • It has at least 1000 citations.

This list may not be complete. If anyone finds a missing entry, please leave a comment below.

Interesting list! Are not references 5, 16, 17 about fluids?

I am probably wrong but Hashin&Shtrickman's work on composites should be placed in the list too. Unfortunately, I cannot clarify that myself because my ISI access is limited.

(1) the reason for that is because we view G.I. Taylor as solid mechanician, maybe that is not true;

(2) We have checked that Hashing-Shtrikman's work have been cited well below 1000.

Thank you so much for taking the time to do the survey, and to migrate this post from AMR.

It would be wonderful if another iMechanician will follow your lead and post the most cited papers published in last year, or last ten years, or last 20 years. It might give us some idea of contemporary and evolving interests in mechanics.

It would also be wonderful if someone passionate for a topic make a list of "must reads" on the topic. No doubt other iMechanicians will weigh in to suggest their favorites, as Kosta just did in his comment to your post.

Of course, this idea gets close to Pradeep's idea of the Journal Club, but it is less organized, and anyone can do it on impulse. Who knows? Maybe someone will have just created an excellent post, and possibly a forum of lasting value.

Shaofan, this is an interesting post. Here is something that is related to your list. In connection with someones promotion case,  I recently found out about the so-called H-factor. This is a measure of "scientist quality" which is catching on in the physics and materials community--although personally I remain somewhat cynical about almost all measures.

Essentially this is an alternative to the "impact factor". A scientist or engineer has an H-factor of N if N of his/her publications have N or more citations. Bibiometric research has shown that this measure is a better indicator of an individuals impact than say total citations etc.

You can read more about it here which also has a list of H-factors for some prominent scientists and as well on Nature's coverage of it.

This same topic has come up here at Duke of late.  ISI (through Web of Knowledge) now includes the capability to calculate this for an author automatically.

I think these metrics are just one piece of information that shed light into the quality/impact of someone's body of work.  I'm a little wary of them being weighted too heavily by administrators in promotion and hiring cases.

A former colleague of mine, just as wary of these numbers as you are, once suggested that we weigh the papers each person has.  The number may not be more useless than any other such numbers, but perhaps less convenient in this age!

Pradeep Sharma's picture

iAs sometimes Lewis Wheeler points out to me, in the modern age, perhaps we can suggest to our beancounter admin friends to use the total number of megabytes of papers!

Taylor appears thrice, while Eshelby, Rice, and Biot appear twice in the list--if the exact number of citations are counted, the order is still Taylor, Eshelby, Biot, and Rice. However, if we remove the papers on fluids which Prof. Konstantin pointed out, the order is reversed to Eshelby, Rice, Biot, Taylor... So, I guess, I will go with Prof. Konstantin with the following understanding--not that Taylor is less of a solid-mechanician, but, he is more of a continuum mechanician!

This year's Timoshenko medalist KL Johnson and his collaborators (Johnson, K.L.; Kendall, K.; Roberts, A.D.) have more than 1855 citations for the JKR theory of adhesion, based on the ISI web of Knowledge.

The following paper by Greenwood and Williamson deserves to be on the list

GREENWOO.JA, WILLIAMS.JB

the JKR theory JOHNSON et al P ROY SOC LOND A 324, 301  -- 1971
has even more, at least 1394 documents in the database are related to parent record. (500 shown)

Following up on a tip given by Michelle Oyen, I found this list of highly cited papers on poroelasticity identified by Alex Cheng of PoroNet

Noel ODowd's picture

It is interesting that 4 of the 'top 18 list' come from the somewhat specialised (?) area of Fracture Mechanics. I wonder why these papers rank so highly.

MichelleLOyen's picture

Is it because the list represents relatively modern literature that was published as individual papers?  I keep wondering why Hertz's original contact mechanics work would not be on this list except that it is most often cited via a chapter reference to his "Miscellaneous papers" in English or indirectly via something like Johnson's contact mechanics.

This list actually was displayed on the screen at a recent symposium on "Future Directions in Solid Mechanics" held at Cambridge in October (where it was noted to have been pulled from iMech!) to illustrate that you had to get to position 17 on the list before you hit the first paper that really qualified as computational mechanics.

Robert Paynter's picture

Timoshenko & Goodier's "Theory of Elasticity" really ought to be in the list.

Google Scholar credits it with almost twice the number of cites (3597) as Eshelby's top paper (1803). If those ratios with your numbers hold up then his other book "Theory of Elastic Stability" with JM Gere should make the list as well.

I notice you used the Web of Science; I have found it dissapointing lately compared with Google Scholar because it doesn't cover books, conference proceedings and other sources at all well. Agreed it does some things better but - I tend to go to Google first nowadays.

Henry Tan's picture

citation number just gives you an idea of who is who; should not be too serious about that.

The work of Prof. A. C. Eringen on micropolar elasticity should be added in the list.
