Near-incompressible analysis

Submitted by Alejandro Orti… on

Hello all,

I am studying some simple finite elements for 2d near-incompressible analysis. Particularly, I am interested in the MINI element. It is basically a 3-node triangle element with nodal pressure and displacement degree of freedoms enriched by a bubble function. Could someone that has some experience with these elements point me out about advantages and drawbacks of using these type of elements?

Thanks,

Alejandro.

Hi Alex,

You could be interested in NICE elements (Nodal Intergation Continuum Elements) developped by Krisl and his co-workers published in IJNME.

By the way, your problem is geometrically linear or nonlinear?

Hello Phu,

For now it is just linear. Thanks, I have the paper you mention. Just I would like to survey the element that seems to be the simplest one, the MINI element. In the book "Finite elements for flow problems" by Donea and Huerta, a poor pressure approximation is reported for the 3D version of this element. I would like to know if the same applies for the 2D version.

Alejandro.
