Postdoctoral Position in FEM Flow Modeling

tyler westover's picture

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a post-doctoral researcher  to perform research in developing numerical simulations to understand and predict the flow behavior of diverse particulate (granular) materials. Target applications include feeding and handling systems, including bins, hopper, and augers, as well as existing and future laboratory instruments that can be used to characterize feeding and handling properties. The research will involve comparing the predictions of existing flow models based upon numerical methods to the results of physical experiments conducted at laboratory and pilot scales to downselect and potentially customize the flow models to achieve agreement within experimental uncertainty. The researcher will also be involved in the design of new lab and pilot scale tests to validate modeling approaches and provide information to guide future modeling efforts. In this effort, the researcher will focus primarily on continuum modeling approaches that will include Mohr-Coulomb, linear Drucker-Prager Cap (DPC), modified DPC, micro-polar, and non-local models, although the researcher will also work with other researchers who are developing discrete element method (DEM) models. Primary software that will be used for the continuum modeling includes Abaqus® and Comsol® as well as Matlab®. This position requires a strong background in finite element methods (FEM), and experience with plasticity and elasticity in structural mechanics is greatly beneficial.
