Hyperelastic material characterization: why they call it the pure shear specimen

Submitted by wvmars on

Many people puzzle over the nomenclature of the pure shear test. They rightly point out that 1) the Pure Shear test piece is loaded in tension by extending the specimen in the axial direction, and 2) a shearing deformation, by definition, involves the lateral motion of parallel planes. They wonder where is the "shear"? and what does it mean to say that the shear is "pure"?  Here, we review the origins of the terminology.

Coupling Constraint trouble

I read in the Abaqus documentation that a Coupling Constraint couples the motion of a surface to the motion of a single point.  I am modeling 1/8 of a square bar using symmetry wrt 3 planes at the origin (0,0,0). The free end of the bar is a surface perpendiclar to the X global axis. I define a ref point at (L,0,0,) where L is the length of the bar. Then I use the coupling constraint to `couple' the dof U1 at the surface at X=L to the ref point. I apply a single load CF1 at the ref point. The surface should move along X without rotating. It rotates !!! What have I done wrong ???

Post Buckling Analysis using Nastran Sol 106

Can anyone help me out to resolve DMAP Fatal Message 9061(IFPL) - the version requested on the restart FMS statement is not valid for restart purposes. subsequent restarts should reference a prior valid version.

What this error and why it is happening?

Thanks in Advance

Section assignments for large assemblies in ABAQUS CAE

I am getting started with ABAQUS, and so far, I have had to assign a section property to every part of the assembly, which takes a long time for large assemblies. Often the entire assembly has the same section assignment. Is there a way to assign the same section to various instances?

I thank you all in advance.

Notes on thermoplasticity

Submitted by Biswajit Banerjee on

I've recently had the opportunity to take another look at plasticity in the large deformation context.  I've avoided going into geometric and other issues involved with multiplicative deformations (points stressed in earlier blog posts by Giovanni (node/11545), Arash (node/11623)  and Xiabo (node/11599).  Attached are some old notes that I'd prepared some years ago to help me with the details.  I hope they're of use to other students of mechanics.

LINKING FORTRAN AND C++ WITH ABAQUS

Submitted by Kianoosh.Marandi on

Dear all

I realized so many users have problems in
linking Fortran and C++ to  ABAQUS to run user-subroutine codes such as
VUMAT and UMAT. I managed to collect all information (some taken from imechnica) which
is necessary to establish a  proper link. These are my recommended steps :

1-Install ABAQUS

2-Install Microsoft Visual STUDIO (trial
version is good enough!) and install Intel Visual Fortran Compiler if it is not included in the Visual Studio package.
