Entropic-elasticity-controlled dissociation and energetic-elasticity-controlled rupture induce catch to slip bonds in cell-adhes

Submitted by Yujie Wei on

In order to achieve a wide variety of biological phenomena, the abilities of cells to contact effectively and interact specifically with neighboring media play a central role. It is known that cells can sense the chemical and mechanical properties of surrounding systems and regulate their adhesion and movement through binding protein molecules within cell membrane. The kinetics of binding molecules interacting with ligands is of great interest in biophysical society. There are lots of discussions and contributions on cell mechanics from our mechanical society, e.g.

Cell and Biomolecular Mechanics in silico, Nature Materials, Volume 7, 2008.

Recent developments in computational cell and biomolecular mechanics have provided valuable insights into the mechanical properties of cells, subcellular components and biomolecules, while simultaneously complementing new experimental techniques used for deciphering the structure–function paradigm in living cells. These computational approaches have direct implications in understanding the state of human health and the progress of disease and can therefore aid immensely in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

Metal Foam fracture

Submitted by mhmd abdelshafy on

Dear All

I'm working on studing the use of metal foam in sandwich structre containing Al or steel plate to overcome an impact shells or plates at differnet impact velocity but the prblem that I face how to define the failure critrion of Meat foam except difine the crushable foam properties, and I've read a paper on using cohesive element but i don'nt know how to use it.

Hopefully some one can help me solving this prblem, by the way I'm using ABAQUS v6.6

The Study by Mr. Wu etc Concerning Saint-Venant’s Principle is Insignificant

Submitted by Jian-zhong Zhao on

The paper titled "The Study by Mr. Wu etc  Concerning Saint-Venant’s Principle is Insignificant" reviewed the series of four works of “proof of Saint-Venant’s Principle” published by Wu etc .The four articles proved neither the discrete Saint-Venant type decay of section-forces of the finite elements in the chain model of discretization of the cylinder  nor  the discrete Saint-Venant-type decay of section-displacements, posed in their papers. Furthermore, the discrete Saint-Venant type  decay of section-forces  is not provable.
