Postdoctoral Position Opening at Stanford University

Prof. Wei Cai at the Mechanical Engineering Department of Stanford University is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to lead a project on the modeling of grain structure evolution in the surface layer under friction.  The major task of this project is the development of a phase field model for grain/sub-grain structure evolution under friction.  It is likely that molecular dynamics and dislocation dynamics simulations would be required as well to obtain a good physical understanding of the process.

Differential Complexes in Continuum Mechanics

We study some differential complexes in continuum mechanics that involve both symmetric and non-symmetric second-order tensors. In particular, we show that the tensorial analogue of the standard grad-curl-div complex can simultaneously describe the kinematics and the kinetics of motions of a continuum. The relation between this complex and the de Rham complex allows one to readily derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for the compatibility of the displacement gradient and the existence of stress functions on non-contractible bodies.

Representative Volume Element Calculations under Constant Stress Triaxiality, Lode Parameter, and Shear Ratio

Recent experiments showed that the Lode parameter, which distinguishes between axisymmetric and shear dominated stress states, has a profound effect on material ductility, especially at low stress triaxiality. Consequently, the theoretical framework for void growth and coalescence is currently being revisited, which often involve performing representative volume element (RVE) calculations. The present study investigates an RVE composed of a cubic unit cell containing a spherical void at its center.

Fatigue of multiscale composites with secondary nanoplatelet reinforcement: 3D computational analysis

3D numerical simulations of fatigue damage of multiscale fiber reinforced polymer composites with secondary nanoclay´reinforcement are carried out. Macro–micro FE models of the multiscale composites are generated automatically using Python based software. The effect of the nanoclay reinforcement (localized in the fiber/matrix interface (fiber sizing) and distributed throughout the matrix) on the crack path, damage mechanisms and fatigue behavior is investigated in numerical experiments.

Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Computational Mechanics - The George Wasgington University

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the George Washington University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor starting fall semester 2015. The primary field of interest is mechanics of geomechanical and structural systems. Applications from women and under-represented minority groups are strongly encouraged.

Strain hardening

The attached notes are written for a course on plasticity.  I will update new posts on my twitter account:  https://twitter.com/zhigangsuo.  Rheology is the science of deformation. This science poses a question for every material: given a history of stress, how do we find the history of strain?

Post Doctoral Position

Open Post Doctoral Position in Biomechanics for 2 years, fully employed, at the Institute of Biomechanics in Graz, Austria.

Graphene reinforced polymer composites: 3D micromechanical modelling, damage and fracture

3D computational model of graphene reinforced polymer composites is developed and applied to the analysis of damage and fracture mechanisms in the composites. The graphene/polymer interface properties are determined using the inverse modeling approach. The effect of composite structure, in particular, of the aspect ratio, shape, clustering, orientation and volume fraction of graphene platelets on the
mechanical behavior and damage mechanisms of nanocomposites are studied in computational experiments.

Sutured tendon repair; a multi-scale finite element model.

We've recently published an open access journal paper that looks at the mechanics of sutures used to repair severed tendons. A homogenization strategy is used to derive effective elastic properties for tendon fibrils and intracellular matrix. We have found that regions of high stress correlate with the regions of cell death (necrosis) that are sometimes observed in patients.

If this is of interest, please feel free to view the paper here.
