von-mises stresses in solid model with and without pores

Hello Everyone,

My name is Muhammad Imran and I am a PhD student in TU, Dortmund. I am performing tensile test simulation in Abaqus for aluminium silicon alloy. I am calculating stresses for three different models, one model is solid (zero porosity) and second model has a cavity inside and third model has some pores inside.

5 years post-doctoral fellowship available, University of Southampton

I am looking for a post-doctoral research fellow with a high academic profile to join me on the PhotDyn project. The topic concerns the development of novel high strain rate testing procedures based on ultra-high speed deformation imaging and inverse identification. I am mainly looking for someone with expertise in constitutive modelling of materials. The detailed job description can be consulted here.

Research Assistant Position with a possibility for obtaining a PhD @ Loughborough University, UK

Research Assistant in Material Modelling ( 2 years)

Project goal: Develop physics-based numerical tools capable of characterising material behaviours in nickel and titanium alloys, linking micro and macro length scales. The models developed will be relevant for a broad temperature range, high deformations (up to failure) and high strain rates.

The Research Assistant will work as part of a multidisciplinary team consisting of partners from the UK (Univ. of Oxford) and India (IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IISc Bangalore), as well as with the industrial partners.

PhD in experimental mechanics of 3D printed materials @ Ghent University (Belgium)

The approved research project is a collaboration between the companies V!go, Materialise, Devan and Ghent University. It is a feasibility study for 3D printed orthoses, that can be 3D printed and thus tailor-made for every patient. An orthosis (plural: orthoses) is "an externally applied device used to modify the structural and functional characteristics of the neuromuscular and skeletal system".

Geometry, topology, and solid mechanics

Differential geometry in simple words is a generalization of calculus on some curved spaces called manifolds. An n-manifold is a space that locally looks like R^n but globally can be very different. The first significant application of differential geometry happened to be in Einstein’s theory of general relativity.

8th GRACM International Congress on Mechanics, Volos, Greece, 12-15 July 2015

Dear colleagues,

Τhe Greek Association of Computational Mechanics (GRACM) in association with the Mechanical and Civil Engineering Departments of the University of Thessaly will organize the 8th GRACM conference in a series of congresses in the area of computational mechanics. The conference will be held between the 12th and 15th of July 2015 in the facilities of the University of Thessaly in Volos which is the host city of most of its academic departments.

New shear lock free finite elements with arbitrary higher order derivative

A set of highly efficient and shear lock free finite elements based on Timoshenko  beam and Reissner-Mindlin plate theories has been developed for the analysis of thin and thick structures. These elements have arbitrary higher order derivatives and do not require any spcial integration scheme. All are isoparametric elements.

Truss Me! It’s great for learning

In a large "Mechanics of Materials" class at ETH Zurich, I incorporated an educational game, Truss Me!, into the class. It showed the potential gaming apps have in enhancing traditional teaching of mechanics.

Getting ready for Extreme Mechanics Letters

We are launching a new journal, Extreme Mechanics Letters. EML will publish letter-sized papers. We aim to achieve rapid communication. Our goal is to have the accepted papers published within 6-8 weeks upon submission. We aim to build a home at the frontier of engineering, medicine, science and entertainment, where advances are rapid and mechanics matters. We seek papers from researchers in all disciplines.

We will start to review submissions on 1 October 2014, and publish first papers by 1 December 2014. The beginning issues will be freely accessible online, and printed copies will be distributed at conferences.

We love to publish your extremely new ideas on extremely useful and extremely interesting mechanics. Please submit your papers soon.

Help compile list of available micromechanics codes

Computer simulations will be used more and more for composites design and manufacturing. Before an engineer can simulate, there are at least two questions: what are the tools available and which one works for my problem. Thus, as a start, cdmHUB plan to compile a list of micromechanics codes for the community, including commercial codes, public domain codes, or research codes. To make the list as complete as possible, we need your help.
