Incomplete thoughts on mass flux and superposed RBM

Submitted by Amit Acharya on

Attached are some (hand-written) observations on wanting to do continuum mechanics when mass is not conserved for fixed sets of particles of the body (so, situations transcending the rocket-losing-mass type). I feel (un)comfortable with these observations, depending upon the day I think about such things.

Deadline extended: CSME International congress: Fatigue and Fracture of engineering materials

Submitted by rajeshprasanna on

All,

The deadline to submit article for the CSME international congress has been extended to February 17th, 2012. We are organizing a symposium on fatigue and fracture of engineering materials and strongly encourage researchers around the world to submit their research articles relevant to this field.

More information can be obtained from the following website:  http://umanitoba.ca./engineering/conferences/csme2012/index.html

EXTENDED ABSTRACT SUBMISSION: Nanobrücken II: A Nanomechanical Testing Workshop, March 22-23, 2012, INM Saarbrücken, Germany

Submitted by Oden Warren on

Dear Colleague:

You are cordially invited to attend Nanobrücken II:  A Nanomechanical Testing Workshop, jointly presented by INM - Leibniz Institute for New Materials and Hysitron, Inc., with co-sponsorship from the JEOL company. This is the second workshop in the Nanobrücken series. The workshop's scope has been broadened, and the abstract submission deadline is now February 19, 2012.

Submitted by A.Tabarraei on

Fully funded Ph.D. positions are available in the Department
of Mechanical Engineering & Engineering Science at the University of North
Carolina at Charlotte. The research focus will be on developing and using multiscale methods for modeling nanocomposites and nanomaterials. Candidates should have a BS or MS degree in
mechanical engineering, material science, civil engineering or other related
areas. Computational experience at the continuum or molecular level is
preferred but is not necessary.  Interested
candidates please send a CV to atabarra [at] uncc.edu (atabarra[at]uncc[dot]edu)

ICTAM2012 extension of paper submission deadline

Submitted by J. Chen on

Representatives from several countries have contacted the Local Organising Committee of ICTAM2012 (http://www.ictam2012.org/) to say that many of their colleagues had found it impossible to meet the deadline of 9 January, because it was too close to their countries’ winter holidays, and requesting an extension. The organisers therefore announce an extension until 24.00 hours (Beijing time) on Thursday 19 January, 2012, by which time all short papers must be received.

A variational approach to predict percolation thresholds of nanomaterials

Submitted by Frankxu on

Study on the properties of inhomogeneous media plays a central role throughout the history of physics, e.g.

Possion’s theory on magnetism of composites, Faraday’s dielectric model of composites, Maxwell’s and later

Rayleigh’s work on conductivity of composites, and Einstein’s thesis on viscosity of fluid-particle media. As

a special branch of this field, percolation research on phase transition and critical phenomena was originated

with lattice percolation theories in 1950s [1]. The idealization of a lattice structure is convenient for analytical
