PhD studentship, In vivo measurement of strains in intervertebral discs

I'm pleased to offer applications for a PhD studentship on measurement of strains in vivo in intervertebral discs at the University of Exeter. It will be co-supervised by myself on (the mechanics side) and Dr J Meakin (on the medical imaging side).

Experience with optical strain measurement (eg DIC, virtual fields method etc), reverse engineering problems and/or finite elements would be desirable. Tax free stipend of approx 14.5k GBP, funding only covers registration fees for EU nationals (ie non-EU nationals must find extra funding at circa 9k GBP per year for 3 years)

New Chairs at University of Exeter

The University of Exeter will shortly announce several new chairs it is seeking to fill.

The chairs are full tenured chairs and in the following areas -

Cell Mechanics (two chairs, one nominally experimental and one nominally theoretical).

Structural Dynamics, possibly with an aerospace flavour.

If you are interested, or know someone who might be, please contact me (c.w.smith-at-exeter.ac.uk) for an informal discussion.

Regards,

Chris Smith

non-linear friction in FE

We are looking at implementing a non-linear model with friction, and at least in the first place for statics. We haven't found much in the literature on non-linear models for friction in FE.

Anyone any advice on key papers to read ?

Thanks,

Chris

Nancomposite textbook for undergrads ? recommend me one.

Dear All,

I've got to start teaching a masters level programme on nanocomposites, well 7 lectures worth of one anyway. It will serve as an introduction to NCs and briefly review the current stat of the art.

I would like opinions on textbooks to accompany such a module.

Any of you had any good experiences with any particular books ?

Thanks,

Chris
