Question on history of mechanics

Submitted by P Hartley on

A question for those interested in the history of mechanics. We have Hooke's law for 2D stress-strain and a generalised Hooke's law for 3D stress states. Maybe I have missed something in my reading of history, but since it appears that it was Thomas Young and not Hooke who related stress and strain (Hooke looked only at force - displacement), why don't we use Young's law or a generalised Young's law?

How to define pressure direction in ANSYS

Submitted by ladanyi on

Hi everyone,

I am quite new in ANSYS Classic and now I had to realize a serious problem. After building a steel frame from beam4 elements I tried to define pressure on beams.

I can not find the direction of the pressure. It could work in or perpendicular to the plane of the frame (for example).

Could anybody help me, how to define the direction?

A new book chapter of the role of the actin cytoskeleton in mechanosensation

Submitted by Tian Zhi Luo on

We wrote a book chapter about the role of the actin cytoskeleton in mechanosensation. The book title is Mechanosensitivity and Mechanotransduction, edited by A, Kamkin and I. Kiseleva and published by Springer-Verlag, New York.".

In this chapter, we try to integrate mechanics, materials science, biophysics and biology together to give a most updated view of this field. We also want to introduce the feedback loop concept to mechanicians who are interested in studying biological systems.

Molecular dynamic simulation on Projectile

Submitted by Shuozhi Xu on

Hi, everyone~

Has anyone done MD simulation about projectile? Like a rigid body penetrating a thin target? I have recently heard that a group in Uni of southern california did such a simulation before. I will be appreciated if someone could afford me some information.

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Xu

Submitted by Jung W. Hong on

Dear Colleague,

The Sixth M.I.T. Conference on Computational Fluid and Solid Mechanics will be held in June 2011 at M.I.T.

The theme of the Conference is "Solids & Structures", and the topic is interpreted in a very broad way.

The Abstracts for full papers to be published in Computers & Structures are due January 31, 2010.

Faculty Positions in Computational Multiscale methods at University Paris-Est, France

Submitted by Julien Yvonnet on

The University Paris-Est Marne la Vallée, France, invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions in multiscale computational mechanics, as assistant professor level, for September 2010 start date. The candidates will be hosted by the Laboratory of Multiscale Computational Mechanics (Laboratoire Modélisation et Simulation Multi Echelle, MSME UMR 8208 CNRS). Successful candidates are expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and carry out a research program with potential collaborations at the European and International level.
