The effect of surface roughness on the adhesion of elastic solids
I have noticed several online postings criticizing reviewers but haven’t seen a post appreciating them. Talking more about bad reviewers can give a wrong impression to the young researchers that the majority of the reviewers are bad. Therefore, I thought of sharing my experience.
We have published over 20 papers, and of course, got several rejections. However, I haven’t encountered an unreasonable reviewer yet. A reviewer can occasionally miss a point in a manuscript, but the reviewers repeatedly asked us fair questions and provided meaningful comments.
Two Ph.D. positions in the area of mechanics of soft materials are available immediately/Fall21/Spring22 at UT Austin. The students can choose to enroll in Engineering Mechanics or Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering. Some background in nonlinear solid mechanics, linear algebra, and numerical methods (finite element method and/or isogeometric analysis) is preferable, but not required!

Adherent cells are able to actively generate internal forces, channeled by cytoskeletal protein filaments and transmitted through transmembrane receptors to the surrounding environment by means of focal adhesions.
Polymeric plastics deform irreversibly (i.e., inelastically) whereas rubbers deform reversibly, i.e., elastically.
Thus, uniaxially stretching a rubber-plastic bilayer composite beyond its yield point can create an elastic strain mismatch between the two layers. Upon release, the bilayer may then bend out-of-plane.
Complex mechanical behaviours are generally met in macroscopically homogeneous media as effects of inelastic responses or as results of unconventional material properties, which are postulated or due to structural systems at the meso/micro-scale.
Examples are strain localization due to plasticity or damage and metamaterials exhibiting negative Poisson’s ratios resulting from special porous, eventually buckling, sub-structures.
