Can wear completely suppress thermoelastic instabilities?
ThermoElastic Instabilities (TEI) occur in sliding bodies at sufficiently high speed because a small thermoelastic disturbance tends to localize the contact, leading to “hot spots”. The role that wear plays in TEI has been studied briefly and only on highly idealized cases. We extend and complete in detail a model of Dow and Burton who studied the specific configuration of a blade sliding on a rigid halfspace normal to its line of contact. We find there is a limit value of wear coefficient, that can be estimated by simple equations, above which TEI is completely eliminated.

Mechanics of Soft Materials - second edition
This is a corrected, revised and expanded edition. I added new Chapter 11 on modeling fracture in soft materials. Arguably, fracture is the central and unsolved problem in solid mechanics. I describe a new perspective on this problem based on the material sink approach, in which momenta and mass balance are coupled.
2 Research Assistant/Associate positions in CFD modelling of dust explosions (2 years)
Applications are invited for two Research Assistant (PhD candidates) or Research Associates (post-docs) positions at the University of Oviedo, in close collaboration with Imperial College London. Research Assistants will be appointed for 2 years while Research Associates will be appointed initially for one year, with the possibility of extending one more year. Conditional upon satisfactory progress, the researchers will have the opportunity to divide their time between the University of Oviedo and Imperial College upon their convenience.
