Biologically-derived and chemically-treated collagenous tissues such as glutaraldehyde-treated bovine pericardium (GLBP) are widely used in many medical applications. The long-term cyclic loading-induced tissue fatigue damage has been identified as one of the primary factors limiting the durability of such medical devices and an in-depth understanding of the fatigue behaviors of biological tissues is critical to increase device durability.
Dear Colleague,
I'm pleased to announce the latest paper from my research group (coauthored with Evan Hemingway (PhD 2020)):
Continuous models for peristaltic locomotion with application to worms and soft robots
has just been published in Biomechanics and Modeling in Mechanobiology. Here's a simulation of the model:

Dear colleagues:
We would like to invite you to submit an abstract to the Topic 12-3: 3D Printed Soft Materials at the 2020 ASME IMECE to be held from November 15 – 19 at Portland, Oregon.
Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, offers unique opportunities to explore novel properties and mechanics of soft materials. This topic calls papers from research efforts related to soft materials with novel properties realized or created using 3D printing techniques. Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
The AIAA with the support of Composite Design and Manufacturing HUB (cdmHUB), NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), and Rolls Royce Corporation funding have established an ICME (Integrated Computational Materials Engineering) prize for the best aerospace-focused ICME project. This bi-annual award will not only include recognition at SciTech 2022 conference, but will also provide a $1,500.00 team award.
Open PhD positions are available in the Materials and Mechanics Lab, in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stony Brook University. The research will involve multiscale modeling and characterization of the fracturing of carbon fiber composites. The desired start date is Spring 2021.
The preferred qualifications for the position are:
A position as a Post-doc in the Innovative and Smart Infrastructure Group (ISIG) at the University of Tennessee working with Dr. Wierschem is available starting in Fall 2020. This position is available to US Citizens only. This post-doc will be involved in a research project on vibration isolation. The ideal candidate will have experience in structural dynamics with a PhD in Civil, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering or a related field. Interested candidates should email Dr. Wierschem (nwiersch at utk.edu) with a CV.
