USACM Virtual Seminar by Pania Newell, University of Utah

Submitted by John E. Dolbow on

The USACM is happy to announce a virtual seminar this week on Wednesday, July 1st at 3pm Eastern.  The title of the seminar is "Examining Fracture Behavior in Heterogeneous Poro-Elastic Media from Nano to Macro-Scale".  An abstract of the talk is available here:

We have a number of seats available to anyone interested.  We just ask attendees to register at this page:

Elasticity notes of Eli Sternberg

Submitted by Ruobing Bai on

Here are the elasticity notes of Eli Sternberg over many years as he taught AM 135 at Caltech. I had access to them when I was working with Prof. Kaushik Bhattacharya at Caltech during postdoc. Prof. Bhattacharya suggested making the notes publicly available via iMechanica, and below is a short note from him.

Layered nanocomposites by shear-flow-induced alignment of nanosheets, Chuangqi Zhao, Lei Jiang, Mingjie Liu, Nature, 2020

Novelty/impact/significance:

A generalizable and scalable, continuous fabrication of ultrastrong composite films (with nanosheets of graphene oxide and clay, strength 1215 MPa modulus 198.8 GPa,, and ultrastrong and ultratough composites (with nanosheets of clay, toughness 36.7 MJ/m2 strength 1195 MPa) based on a superspreading layering strategy.

World’s First Spherical Artificial Eye Has 3D Retina

Submitted by Mechanical Eng… on

Hello iMechanica! My name is Ryan and I am the Founder of Mechanical Engineering HQ. I am writing here today to share an interesting development in prosthesis. Scientists have claimed that they have developed a new artificial eye that has more advanced capabilities than human eyes. Read on to see if they have achieved this feat!

Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing or WAAM techniques are attracting interest from the manufacturing industry because of their potential to produce large metal components with low cost and short production lead time. This process exists alongside other high deposition rate metal AM technologies such as powder and wire based DED. While these use either laser or an electron beam as energy source to melt a metal powder or wire, WAAM technologies melt metal wire using an electric arc.
