2007 Dynamic Compression of Condensed Matter
5 - 6 December 2007
The Royal Society, London

The physical science behind dynamic response holds key challenges.

There is a need to understand materials under the extreme environments encountered in energy generation, conversion and exploitation and in wider industrial and defence applications. This meeting will bring together the community to focus on potentially significant emerging and scientifically challenging areas. It will span research areas informing the dynamic response of materials, new techniques and emerging diagnostics, and their application to the atomic to planetary scale. Keynote invited lecturers will outline the state of their fields of interest. The meeting format will encourage debate to air technical experience and identify future challenges ending with a round table discussion defining the key aspects of the field for the next decade.

Conference Overview

  • Shock physics in the 21st century
  • High pressure physics
  • Response under dynamic loading
  • Strength and damage
  • Equations of state
  • Detonation physics
  • Isentropic loading
  • Applications in planetary and space science
  • Materials at multiple length- and time-scales

WORKSHOP ON HYBRID SYSTEMS AND MODEL REDUCTION
Centre for Interdisciplinary Computational and Dynamical Analysis (CICADA)

DATE                        Thursday 19 & Friday 20 March 2009

11.00 - 11.30am - Contributed talk (Henry Tan: Simulating catastrophic interface debonding in energetic materials)

VENUE
Frank Adams Room, The Alan Turing Building,
The University of Manchester

Many systems of relevance to applications are modelled using continuous and discrete state space transitions. This interplay between continuous and discrete time evolutions leads to hybrid systems. The tools from the field of dynamical systems that allow for the analysis and numerical investigations of continuous and discrete time systems, namely singular perturbation methods and centre manifold reduction, allow the qualitative study of system dynamics using low dimensional systems. However, hybrid systems pose a challenge since these reduction methods cannot be directly applied. The goal of the workshop is to look at the recent developments in the area of dynamical systems and model reduction, and identify these tools used in each field, that could be applied for effective investigations of hybrid systems.  To this aim we will look at different formalisms used to tackle hybrid systems, the role of singular perturbations in dynamical systems as a model reduction tool, and at the recent developments in the model reduction theory.
